BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This simple prayer is for the times you want to serve other people well, whether that means caring for family, helping at church, or showing up for a neighbor or coworker. Pray it before you begin a task, on the way to a visit, or when you notice your patience running thin. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where they fit.

Simple Prayer for Serving Others

Lord, you served us first, and you never asked us to earn it. Help me remember that as I step into the ordinary work of caring for others today. Give me eyes to notice who needs a hand, a word, or a little patience, and keep me from waiting until I feel like helping before I act. When I am tired, remind me that you are the one who gives strength, not me.

Keep my motives clean. Let me serve because I love you and love the people in front of me, not so I am thanked or noticed. If I start keeping score, bring it to mind and turn my heart back toward you. Guard my tongue when I am frustrated, and let my hands be gentle even when the work is repetitive or unseen by anyone else. Show me the small things that matter most to the people I am helping.

Thank you for the chance to be a blessing today. Go before me in each conversation and each task, and let my service point others toward your kindness. Hold the people I am serving in your care, and hold me too. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, help me serve the person in front of me today with patience and a willing heart. Show me what they need, give me the strength to do it, and keep my motives pure. Let my hands and words reflect your kindness. Thank you for going with me. Amen.

Mark 10:45

For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

1 Peter 4:10

As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

(WEB)

Philippians 2:3-4

3 Doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself; 4 each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer in the morning before the day’s responsibilities begin, or in the car on the way to a visit, a shift, or a meeting. Keeping a copy on your phone or on a card by the kitchen sink can help you return to it during busy moments. You might also pray it with your hands busy, folding laundry, preparing a meal, or washing dishes, so that the words and the work stay connected.

Consider sharing this prayer with a friend or family member who is also serving others, and pray it together before a volunteer shift or a long week of caregiving. Praying with someone else can keep you accountable to a servant’s heart and remind both of you that the work belongs to God. Afterward, take a moment to thank him for one specific way he helped you serve.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give strength to those who serve with open hands today. May he notice the quiet kindnesses no one else sees, and may he refresh the hearts that give so much. Let each person you help feel the care of God through your presence, and let your service rest on the faithful love of the One who served us first.
