This simple prayer for wisdom is for the moments when you need to make a decision, weigh a hard choice, or simply see the next step more clearly. It is short enough to pray in the middle of a busy day and honest enough to bring to God before a big conversation or a difficult deadline. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Simple Prayer for Wisdom

Lord, I come to You because I do not know what to do. There are choices in front of me that feel heavy, and I keep turning them over in my mind until I am tired and no closer to an answer. I ask You to give me wisdom, the kind that sees what is true, what matters most, and what will last. Help me to notice the people and circumstances You have placed around me, and help me to trust that You see what I cannot.

Quiet my fears so that I can hear You. Keep me from rushing ahead on my own strength, and keep me from freezing when I should act. Where I have been foolish or stubborn, show me the way back. Where I am uncertain about what is right, give me a clear sense of what I should say, what I should set aside, and when I should wait.

Thank You that You give generously to those who ask and do not hold my weakness against me. I trust You with the outcome, and I trust You with the parts of this situation I cannot control. Make my heart willing to follow where You lead, even when the path is not what I hoped for. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need wisdom right now, and I do not have much time to think. Show me what is true and what matters most in this moment. Calm my mind, help me to speak carefully, and help me to act in a way that honors You and cares for the people involved. I trust You to guide the next step. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

This verse promises that God gives wisdom generously to anyone who asks. Pray it as an invitation, telling God that you are asking and trusting that He is willing to answer without scolding you for needing help.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to surrender your own certainty. Pray it slowly, naming the parts of your plan you are tempted to rely on, and asking God to make your path straight where you have been trying to force it.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

This is God speaking directly about guiding His people. Pray it back to Him as a request, asking Him to instruct you and to keep His eye on you when you cannot see where the road leads.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

This verse reminds you that wisdom comes from the Lord and is not simply a product of your own cleverness. Pray it with gratitude, thanking God that the source of understanding is His mouth and His character.

Psalm 25:4-5

4 Show me your ways, the LORD. Teach me your paths. 5 Guide me in your truth, and teach me, For you are the God of my salvation, I wait for you all day long.

(WEB)

Here the psalmist asks God to teach him His ways and lead him in truth. Pray these lines as your own request, asking God to show you the way and to keep you patiently waiting on Him throughout the day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can be still for a few minutes, such as early in the morning before the house wakes up, during a lunch break, or in the car before you walk into a difficult meeting. Keep a pen and paper nearby so that you can write down what you sense God bringing to mind as you pray. Writing slows your thoughts and often reveals the real question underneath the one you started with.

You may also pray this prayer with someone you trust, such as a spouse, a close friend, or a mentor who knows the situation. Ask them to pray the words with you and to remind you of what God has already shown you. Wisdom often grows in community, and another voice can help you see what your own worry has hidden.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gives wisdom freely make your steps clear and your heart steady. May He guard your mind from confusion and give you peace in the decisions still ahead. May you rest in the knowledge that the One who knows all things is walking with you every step of the way.
