This is a simple prayer for the moments when you need courage: a hard conversation you have been avoiding, a diagnosis you are waiting to hear about, a decision that feels too large, or a fear that wakes you before dawn. It asks God for strength you cannot manufacture on your own. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the same request.

Simple Prayer When You Need Courage

Lord, I am afraid, and I am not going to pretend otherwise. My mind keeps running ahead to what could go wrong, and my body feels the tension before I have finished thinking. I need courage today, and I do not have enough of it stored up. So I am asking you to supply what I lack. Steady my hands and quiet the voice that says I cannot do this.

Be near me in the specific things I am facing. Go into the room with me when I have to speak. Sit with me in the waiting. Give me the right words when I do not know what to say, and the patience to wait when waiting is all I can do. Remind me that I do not walk into this alone, and that you have already seen the outcome I cannot yet see.

Help me take the next step, even if it is small. I do not need to be brave for the whole road, only for this moment and then the one after it. Give me enough courage for today, and trust me to come back tomorrow for more. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need courage right now. My heart is pounding and my thoughts are racing. Be with me in this moment, steady my breath, and give me the next step I need to take. Help me trust that you are present in this place and that I am not facing it alone. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

Pray this when the task ahead feels too big. Ask God to remind you that his presence goes with you wherever the courage is needed, so the request becomes a reliance on him rather than on your own nerve.

Psalm 27:1

The LORD is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear feels loud. Name what frightens you, then speak this truth back to God, letting his light and strength answer the thing you are afraid of.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly when you feel worn down. Ask God to hold you up with the same steadiness he promises here, and let each phrase become a request you bring to him in turn.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Turn to this when you are tempted to quit before the hard thing is finished. Pray it as a reminder that God does not leave you during the difficulty, and ask him to keep you from giving up.

2 Timothy 1:7

For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.

(WEB)

Pray this when timidity is holding you back. Ask God to replace the spirit of fear with power, love and a sound mind, and then take one deliberate action that reflects that courage.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying it in the early morning before the day picks up speed, or in the car just before you walk into the place you dread. Put one hand on your chest or hold something steady in your palm, like a coffee mug or the edge of a table. The physical act of pausing gives your body a chance to catch up with what you are asking God for.

If the fear feels too heavy to pray alone, ask a friend, a family member or a pastor to pray it with you or over you. Someone else speaking the words can carry them when your own voice feels thin. Keep a copy of the prayer in your phone or on a card in your wallet so it is ready whenever courage is needed again.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who goes before you give you the courage to take the next step. May he steady your heart when it trembles and remind you that you are held. May you walk into what lies ahead knowing you are loved, and may peace meet you there.
