BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

These prayers are written for seniors: the older parent, grandparent, friend or neighbor you are bringing before God, and for older adults who want to pray for themselves. Pray them in the morning with coffee, at a bedside, on the phone, or before a medical appointment. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Seniors

Lord, you have been faithful to this person through every season of their life, and you are faithful to them now. Their body is slower than it used to be. Stairs take longer, mornings hurt more, and some days the mind does not find the names or words it once held easily. Be near them in those ordinary frustrations. Give them strength for the tasks that still matter to them, and wisdom to know when to ask for help without feeling smaller for it.

Many of the people they love have gone ahead of them, or live far away, or have less time than they would like. Comfort the loneliness that settles into quiet afternoons and long evenings. Send friends, neighbors and family members who will sit with them, call them, and remember them. Guard their heart against fear about the future, about money, about being a burden, and about what their remaining years will hold. Let them rest in the knowledge that their life still has worth in your eyes, whatever their age or ability. Keep their days full of your presence, and when the time comes for their final journey, meet them at the door with the welcome of the one who made them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I bring this older person to you right now. Steady their steps and their heart today. Ease their pain where you see fit, lift the weight of loneliness, and give them someone kind to talk to. Let them feel your nearness in the small moments of this day, and remind them that they are known and loved by you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 71:9

Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails.

(WEB)

This verse asks God not to cast off the aging person in their later years, and to stay with them when their strength is failing. Pray it as a plain request that God would not forget or set aside your loved one as they grow older.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

Here God promises to carry his people through old age and gray hair. Pray this over a senior who worries about being a burden, thanking God that he has already committed himself to carrying them.

Psalm 92:14

They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green…

(WEB)

This verse describes the righteous as still bearing fruit and staying fresh even in old age. Pray it for seniors who feel their best years are behind them, asking God to show them ways they can still grow and give.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Paul contrasts the wasting of the outer body with the daily renewal of the inner person. Pray this for someone whose body is declining, asking God to renew their inner life day by day.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

This prayer from Moses asks God to teach us to number our days so that we may gain a wise heart. Pray it with a senior as you reflect together on time, meaning and the gifts of each day.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time of day when your loved one is most alert, often mid-morning after breakfast or early afternoon before the tiredness sets in. Sit beside them if you can, and hold their hand or rest a hand on their shoulder while you pray. If you cannot be there in person, make the call at a set time each week so they can look forward to it, and pray aloud together before you hang up.

You can also invite others to join in. Ask their children, grandchildren, church friends or neighbors to pray the same prayer on the same day, and let the senior know that many people are holding them in mind. Write the prayer on a card and place it somewhere they will see it, such as beside the kettle, near the bed or on the refrigerator door.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless you and keep you, and may he make his face shine upon you through every year that remains. May you feel his peace when the nights are long, and his joy when the mornings bring small gifts. May the people who love you draw near, and may you know without doubt that you are cherished, held and never forgotten.
