BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

An evening prayer for protection asks God to guard you and the people you love through the night, to take the worries of the day out of your hands, and to give you rest. Pray it at bedtime, after the lights are off or while you are settling in for sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put the prayer into your own words.

Evening Prayer for Protection

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you. I am tired, and some of what happened today is still on my mind: the conversation that went wrong, the bill I have not paid, the message I have not answered. I set those things down now. Take them from me, and help me trust that you are bigger than all of it. Thank you for the good parts of this day too, for the food on the table, the work I could do, and the people who made me smile.

Be my protection tonight. Guard my home and the door I have locked. Watch over the people I love who are sleeping under this roof and in other places, and keep them safe from harm, from fear, and from the evil that prowls in the dark. If I wake in the night with a racing heart, remind me that you are awake and near. Let my sleep be deep and my rest be real. Whatever tomorrow brings, I want to meet it rested and in your care. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am ready to rest. Keep me and my family safe through this night. Guard the doors and the windows, guard our bodies and our minds, and guard us from fear. Take the weight of today from my shoulders and give me sleep that restores me. I trust you to be awake while I sleep. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you lie down, letting each word slow your breathing. Tell God that you are choosing to rest because you believe he keeps you safe, not because you have solved everything that troubles you.

Psalm 121:3-4

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved. He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.

(WEB)

When sleep feels far away, pray this as a reminder that God does not drift off the way you do. Name the people you are worried about and ask him to keep watch over them while you rest.

Psalm 91:4

He will cover you with his feathers. Under his wings you will take refuge. His faithfulness is your shield and rampart.

(WEB)

Picture the shelter this verse describes as you pray it. Ask God to cover you and your loved ones tonight, and thank him for being a refuge you can run to whenever fear rises.

Isaiah 26:3

You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.

(WEB)

Use this verse when your thoughts keep circling. Pray it slowly, and each time your mind wanders back to the day, bring it gently back to God and to the peace he offers.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Read this passage as the day closes and turn each worry into a specific request. Then pray for the peace that guards the heart and mind, asking God to let it settle over you before you sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as after you brush your teeth or once the house has gone quiet, so the prayer becomes part of your nightly rhythm. Sit or lie down in a place where you feel safe. Some people find it helps to rest a hand on the bed, a pillow, or the doorframe as they pray, a small physical reminder that God is present in ordinary things.

Invite someone else to pray it with you, whether a spouse, a child old enough to join in, or a friend on the phone. If you live alone, you can still pray it aloud so the words fill the room. Let the prayer be a conversation rather than a performance: pause where you need to, add names, and stop when sleep comes.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you and your household through the night. May he be a wall around you and a light in the dark, and may you wake to find his mercy new again. Rest well, knowing that you are held by a God who never sleeps.
