BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This prayer is for the moments before you walk into your workplace, whether that is an office, a shop floor, a classroom, a hospital ward, or your kitchen table with a laptop. Pray it on the way out the door, in the car, or while your coffee cools, and read it aloud as written or use it as a starting point for words of your own.

Prayer Before Work

Lord, thank you for this new day and for the work you have given me to do. Before I walk in, I bring you the things already sitting on my mind: the deadlines, the emails waiting in my inbox, the conversation with my manager I have been dreading, and the coworker whose tone always seems to put me on edge. You know every task ahead of me and every person I will meet. Help me to see my work as a way of serving you, even the tedious parts.

Give me steady focus so I can do my best without becoming anxious about what I cannot control. When I feel pressure, remind me that my worth is not measured by my output, and that you are with me in the meetings, the phone calls, and the quiet hours at my desk. Make me honest, patient, and fair with the people I work alongside. Where I am tempted to cut corners, gossip, or grumble, turn my heart toward what is good. Guide my choices today, and let my work be done with integrity. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am heading into work and I need you right now. Give me clear thinking for the tasks in front of me, patience with the people I will meet, and the courage to do the hard things well. Keep me honest and kind, and help me not to carry tomorrow’s worries into today. Thank you that you are already at work in my day. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to change how you see your job, so that each task becomes an offering to him rather than only a demand on your time. Ask for the motivation to do ordinary work with care.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Bring your plans for the day to God and ask him to establish them according to his purposes. Let this verse loosen your grip on outcomes you cannot guarantee and turn your planning into trust.

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

(WEB)

Ask that the favor and beauty of the Lord rest on your work today, and that what you do with your hands would be established. Pray this as a request for fruitfulness that lasts beyond the day.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When your mind starts racing about the day ahead, pray these words slowly and hand each worry to God in turn. Ask for the peace that guards your thoughts while you work.

Matthew 6:34

Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient.

(WEB)

Use this verse to release tomorrow’s concerns before you step into today. Ask God for the strength to deal with what is in front of you now and to trust him with what lies ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the few minutes before you start work, while you are still in your car, on the bus, or standing at the door with your keys in hand. Keeping your hands busy can help: hold your coffee, grip the steering wheel, or rest a hand on your bag or lunch box as a small reminder that you are bringing the day to God. If you have a moment at your desk before the first message comes in, you can pray it quietly there.

It also helps to pray this with someone else. A spouse, roommate, or friend can pray it over you before a shift, or you can pray it together over a shared team or family member who is heading into a difficult day. Praying for others’ work turns a private routine into a shared trust in God’s care.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk beside you through every task. May he give you clear thought, steady hands, and a kind word for everyone you meet. May his peace guard your heart when pressure rises, and may your work today bring him honor.
