This page offers a written prayer for the time of illness, whether the sickness is your own, a child’s, a spouse’s, or a friend’s. Pray it when the diagnosis is still unclear, when the medicine is not working, or when you lie awake in the early hours wondering what comes next. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer During Illness

Lord, I come to you tired and afraid in this sickness. My body feels unfamiliar to me, and some days I cannot do even the simple things I used to do without thinking. I do not know how long this will last, and the not knowing wears on me more than the pain does. Please be near me in the waiting rooms, in the long nights, and in the quiet moments when no one else is awake.

Give me the strength to endure what I must endure, and the wisdom to ask for help when I need it. Guide the hands of the doctors and nurses who care for me, and give them patience and clear thinking. Keep my family from carrying more worry than they can bear, and show them how to take care of me without losing themselves. Where there is fear in my heart, replace it with trust that you see me and have not forgotten me.

Heal what can be healed, and where healing does not come in the way I hope, sustain me in your presence anyway. Let this season not be wasted in my life, and let me find you in it. Hold me in your hands, and remind me that I belong to you whatever my condition. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am sick and I need you right now. I cannot pray long, so I simply ask you to be here with me. Ease the pain where you choose to ease it, steady my breathing, and give me enough peace to get through this hour. Thank you that you hear even the smallest prayer. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 41:3

The LORD will sustain him on his sickbed, and restore him from his bed of illness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request for God’s personal care while you lie in bed or sit in a chair too tired to move. Ask him to sustain you in the places where your strength has run out, and thank him that the psalmist saw him as the one who holds the sick.

Psalm 147:3

He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.

(WEB)

Use this verse to bring your wounds and aching places before God by name. Speak the specific injuries and sorrows out loud, trusting that the one who binds up the broken hearted is paying attention to each one.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

When fear rises during a long illness, pray this verse slowly, one phrase at a time. Let each line remind you of God’s presence and his promise to strengthen you, and ask him to make those words real in your body and mind.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel you have nothing left to give. Ask God to show you where his grace is meeting you in your weakness, even if your condition has not changed, and let his sufficiency be the thing you lean on.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the hours that feel darkest, such as sleepless nights or the wait for test results. Ask the Shepherd to walk beside you through the valley, and name the specific fears you carry so he can meet each one.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it easiest to pray in the early morning, before the day’s appointments and phone calls begin, or late at night when the house is quiet. Keep a glass of water and a box of tissues near your chair or bed so your hands have something to do while you pray. If you are too weak to speak, you can read the prayer silently or ask someone you trust to read it aloud to you.

Invite a family member, friend, or pastor to pray this prayer with you, or to pray it for you in their own words. Ask them to call or send a message when they have prayed, so you know you are carried by others even when you cannot be at church. Return to the prayer each day, and let it shape the shape of your waiting.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every ache and every fear be near to the one who is sick today. May he give rest to the weary body, peace to the anxious mind, and hope to the heart that is tired of waiting. May he guard the way forward and keep you held close through every hour.
