This prayer is for the people you love most, the ones whose health, choices, struggles or quiet burdens you carry in your heart. Pray it when you wake and feel their name on your mind, before a hard phone call, or during a long drive when worry starts to crowd out everything else. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words once the first lines have opened the way.

Prayer for a Loved One

Lord, you know the person I am thinking of today, and you know them far better than I ever could. You know the thoughts they keep to themselves at night, the fears they have not yet named out loud, and the hopes they are afraid to hope for. I bring them to you now, [name them], and I ask you to meet them exactly where they are. Be near them in the ordinary hours, in the drive to work, the empty kitchen, the message they have been putting off. Steady their heart and quiet the noise in their mind.

Father, I also lift up the decisions and relationships that weigh on them. Give them wisdom for the choices in front of them and the courage to take the next honest step, even when the path is unclear. Where they have been hurt, comfort them with a tenderness only you can give. Where they have hurt someone, soften their pride and open their eyes to what needs mending. Surround them with people who will speak truth gently and stand with them without judgment.

I release my own need to control the outcome, Lord. I do not know everything that is coming for them, but I trust that you are already at work in ways I cannot see. Keep them held in your hands when I am tired or distracted, and let your peace guard them when I cannot be there. Thank you for loving them more than I do. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, [name] is on my heart right now. You see every part of their day and every worry they carry. Hold them close, give them the strength they need for this hour, and let them feel your nearness. Guide what they do next and bring them peace where there is fear. Thank you that they are never outside your care. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray these words over your loved one when you feel helpless. Ask God to keep their going out and coming in under his watch, from this day into whatever comes next.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your loved one is anxious. Ask that they would bring their requests to God in prayer, and that a peace beyond understanding would settle over their thoughts.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this when your loved one feels distant from God or from anyone who cares. Ask that they would know, deep down, that nothing in life can separate them from his love.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Let this verse become a prayer for courage. Ask God to remind your loved one that he is with them, and to strengthen them for whatever they are facing today.

Ephesians 3:16-19

16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, that you may be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inward man; 17 that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; to the end that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18 may be strengthened to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, 19 and to know Christ’s love which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for your loved one’s inner life. Ask that they would be strengthened in spirit and rooted deeply in God’s love, which is wider and steadier than any worry.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time, such as early morning with a cup of coffee or the few minutes before you fall asleep, and let that become your habit for this person. Keep a photo or a note with their name somewhere you will see it, like the refrigerator door or your phone’s lock screen, as a gentle reminder to pause and pray. Some people find it helps to hold something in their hands while praying, like a ring, a bracelet or a small stone, so the prayer has a physical anchor through the day.

Consider asking one or two trusted friends or family members to pray this same prayer for your loved one, so the burden is shared and the person is covered by more than one voice. If your loved one is willing, you might tell them you are praying for them and ask how you can pray specifically. Their answer often shows you what to lift up next, and it lets them know they are not carrying their struggles alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless [name] and keep them safe in every season. May his face shine warmly upon them and his grace go before them into each new day. May they rest in the knowledge that they are deeply loved, now and always.
