BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This prayer is for the hours and days after a setback: a rejected application, a failed exam, a job lost, a diagnosis that changed the plan, or a dream that simply did not happen. You can pray it at the kitchen table, in the car before walking into work, or late at night when sleep will not come. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where they fit.

Prayer After a Setback

Lord, I did not expect things to turn out this way. I had hoped, planned and worked toward something, and now it is gone or delayed, and I feel the weight of it in my chest. Some of my thoughts keep running back to what I should have done differently, and others race ahead to what might happen next. I am tired, and I am not sure how to keep going. Please meet me in this exact place, not the place I wish I were in.

Help me be honest with you about my disappointment without letting it define who I am. Quiet the voice that says I have failed or that my worth depends on this outcome. Remind me that you saw this coming and that nothing has caught you off guard. Show me whether there is anything I need to learn, repair or let go of, and give me the wisdom to tell the difference between what is mine to fix and what is not. Steady my hands and my heart for the next small step.

Thank you that you do not waste even the broken parts of my story. Give me patience with myself, rest for my body and mind, and people around me who will sit with me without trying to fix everything at once. Help me trust that you are still at work, even when I cannot see it yet. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, this hurts, and you know exactly how much. I bring you the disappointment I cannot put into words right now. Hold me steady, help me breathe, and remind me that you are still good and still near. Show me the next faithful step, even if it is only to rest for a while. I trust you with what comes next. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel crushed by disappointment. Thank God that he is near in the moment of heartbreak, and ask him to draw close to you right now rather than later.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Pray this when you cannot see how a setback could possibly fit into a good plan. Ask God to help you trust his purposes without rushing to explain them.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this when your strength is gone and you feel too worn out to try again. Ask the Lord to renew your energy slowly, one day at a time.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this when the past few weeks have felt endless. Thank God that his faithfulness is renewed each morning, and ask for mercy to meet you at sunrise.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Pray this when worry about what comes next keeps you awake. Bring each specific fear to God in prayer, and ask for the peace that guards your heart and mind.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this in the early morning, before the day’s demands and messages take over. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of something warm, and read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to notice what rises up in you. If words fail, you can simply sit with the open hands in your lap as a sign that you are giving the situation to God.

It can also help to pray this with someone you trust. Ask a friend, a pastor or a family member to pray it with you, or to pray it for you in their own words. Sharing the weight often makes it lighter, and it reminds you that you were never meant to carry a setback alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you rest where you have been striving and courage where you have been afraid. May he remind you that a setback is not the end of your story, and may he bring people near who love you well. May his peace guard your heart as you take the next small step.
