This simple prayer during a move is for the boxes, the goodbyes, the unfamiliar street and the long night before the truck arrives. Pray it at the start of moving day, before you lift the first box, or in the quiet moment when the rooms are empty and echo. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the same spirit.

Simple Prayer During a Move

Lord, you know how much is happening in our lives right now. The house is half packed, the cardboard is everywhere, and every drawer seems to hold a memory we did not expect to feel so strongly. Be near us in the rooms we are leaving. Steady our hands as we wrap the dishes, and steady our hearts when we come across something we cannot bring with us.

We ask for patience with each other. Moves are tiring, and tempers run short when we are hungry, late and sore from lifting. Help us speak gently, forgive quickly and remember that we are on the same side. Guard our children from fear, and help them know that home is wherever we are together. Give us wisdom with the details: the paperwork, the utilities, the keys, the new address we are still learning to write.

Go before us to the new place. We do not yet know the neighbors, the school routes, the doctor down the road or the grocery store that will become familiar. Settle us there in your time. When we pull into the driveway for the first time, let us feel that you were already waiting for us. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired and the boxes keep multiplying. Carry what I cannot carry right now. Keep my family safe on the road and in every lift, and give me a calm mind for the next decision. Help me remember that you are going with us to the new home, just as you have been with us here. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as you watch the truck pull away or see your family off on the highway. Ask the Lord to guard every coming and going, the short trips to the store as well as the long drive to the new city.

Deuteronomy 31:8

The LORD himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.”

(WEB)

Moses spoke these words to Israel before they crossed into an unfamiliar land. Pray them over the new address, asking God to go ahead of you and to keep you from fear when the place feels strange.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

Use this verse for the hard stretches of the move, when the schedule breaks down and the money runs thin. Thank God that the presence promised here is not limited to the waters or fires you expected.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When anxiety about the new job, the new school or the sold house starts to crowd your thoughts, bring each worry to God by name. Ask for the peace this passage describes to guard your heart and mind.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Pray this invitation at the end of a long day of packing. Come to Jesus with the exhaustion itself, and ask him to give you rest even while the work is not yet finished.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find the early morning, before the household wakes, the best time for this prayer. Sit on the floor of an emptied room or at a table still holding a few boxes, and read the prayer slowly. If you are a parent, you might pray it aloud with your children, letting each of them add one thing they are nervous or excited about.

Keep the prayer close to your hands. Write the shorter version on a strip of masking tape and stick it to the box marked “essentials,” or keep it on your phone’s lock screen for the drive. Invite a friend or family member to pray it for you on the day of the move, since someone outside the chaos can often see the needs you have missed.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep your going out and your coming in, from this day forward and forevermore. May he make the new rooms feel like home, and may the people who love you find their way to you there. Peace to you in every unpacked box and every unfamiliar street.
