This page gives you Bible verses to turn to when you need forgiveness, whether you are carrying guilt for something you did, waiting for someone to forgive you, or struggling to forgive yourself. Each group below focuses on a different kind of moment, from the quiet shame that follows a bad decision to the harder work of letting go of a wound someone else caused. The verses share one thread: God’s forgiveness is offered freely, and it is rooted in his character rather than in how well you have performed.

Verses for Quiet Guilt and Private Regret

Some of the heaviest moments happen when no one else knows what you did. You replay a conversation, a choice or a failure, and the weight settles in your chest. These verses speak to that private ache and remind you that confession brings God toward you, not away.

Psalm 32:5

I acknowledged my sin to you. I didn’t hide my iniquity. I said, I will confess my transgressions to the LORD, and you forgave the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

(WEB)

David describes the relief that came when he stopped hiding his wrongdoing and simply admitted it. Try naming the specific thing you regret in one plain sentence, then speak it aloud to God before you go to sleep tonight.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

John links confession with faithfulness and justice, which means God is not reluctant to forgive once you come clean. When guilt returns later in the week, write this verse on a card and read it again instead of arguing with the feeling.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

The psalmist uses the image of east and west to show how far God removes our transgressions. When your mind keeps dragging an old mistake back into view, picture that distance and tell yourself the matter is closed before God.

Verses for Asking Someone Else to Forgive You

Sometimes the hardest part is facing a person you have hurt. Your pride wants to explain, shrink or delay. These verses encourage humility and show that reconciliation with people matters as much as reconciliation with God.

Matthew 5:23-24

23 “If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.

(WEB)

Jesus tells his listeners to put things right with a brother before they offer their gift at the altar. Before worship this Sunday, think of one person you owe an apology and decide on a time to reach out to them.

Proverbs 28:13

He who conceals his sins doesn’t prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.

(WEB)

The proverb contrasts concealing sin with confessing and forsaking it, and promises mercy to the one who turns from it. If you have been making excuses to someone, write down one honest sentence you can say to them without adding a justification.

James 5:16

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

(WEB)

James encourages believers to confess their sins to one another and pray for each other. Consider choosing one trusted friend or mentor who can walk with you, so that your confession is shared rather than carried alone.

Verses for Forgiving Someone Who Hurt You

When you are the one who was wronged, forgiveness can feel like giving the other person a gift they have not earned. These verses do not ask you to pretend the harm was small. They point you toward the grace you have already received as the reason to release the debt.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul ties our forgiveness of others to the forgiveness we have received in Christ. When resentment rises during the day, pause and ask God to help you remember your own undeserved pardon before you respond.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Paul asks believers to bear with one another and forgive as the Lord forgave them. Name the specific grievance you are holding and decide, in prayer, to lay it down, even if the feelings take longer to follow.

Matthew 18:21-22

21 Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Until seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “I don’t tell you until seven times, but, until seventy times seven.

(WEB)

When Peter asks how many times he must forgive, Jesus answers with a number meant to show that forgiveness has no fixed limit. If you are forgiving the same person again, let this verse reassure you that repetition does not mean you are failing.

Verses for Forgiving Yourself and Starting Again

Many people can accept God’s forgiveness in theory but still punish themselves in daily life. These verses speak to that inner judge. They invite you to live as someone who has been made new, rather than someone defined by the worst thing you ever did.

Romans 8:1

There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don’t walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

(WEB)

Paul declares that those who are in Christ Jesus face no condemnation. When self-criticism starts up in the evening, speak this verse out loud and notice whether it changes the tone of your thoughts.

Isaiah 43:25

I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions for my own sake; and I will not remember your sins.

(WEB)

God tells his people that he blots out their transgressions for his own sake and will not remember their sins. Let this be your reminder that God’s memory of your failure is not as long as yours, and invite him to heal the places you keep rehearsing.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

In the middle of a book about ruin, the writer insists that God’s mercies are new every morning. If yesterday’s failure still hangs over you, use tomorrow morning as a deliberate fresh start by reading these words before checking your phone.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul writes that anyone in Christ is a new creation, and the old things have passed away. Try writing down one habit or pattern you want to leave behind and one small step you will take this week to live as the person God is making you.

How to Use These Verses

Choose two or three verses that fit the kind of forgiveness you need most right now. Write them on a note card, in the notes app on your phone, or on the inside cover of your Bible so they are waiting for you when guilt or resentment shows up. Reading them slowly, one phrase at a time, works better than skimming the whole page.

Pray the verses back to God rather than only reading them. Turn a line like “as far as the east is from the west” into a sentence addressed to him, and let the words shape what you ask for. If you are waiting on another person to respond, return to the same verses daily so your heart stays soft while you wait.

A Short Prayer for when you need forgiveness

Lord, you know the things I have done that I would rather hide, and you know the hurts I carry from others. I bring both to you today. I confess what is wrong, and I thank you that you are faithful and just to forgive those who come to you honestly. Help me receive your mercy without dismissing it, and help me extend that same mercy to the people who have wronged me. Where I still feel condemned, remind me that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Make me willing to make things right where I can, and give me patience where I cannot. Amen.
