BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This page offers short prayers for engagements, written for the season when a couple has said yes and the wedding is still ahead. Pray them when you first share the news, before a planning meeting, or on quiet evenings when the list of decisions feels long. You can read the prayers aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Engagements

Father, thank You for bringing us to this season. We are grateful for the ring on her hand, the long talks, and the way we have already started to build a life together. Give us patience with each other when plans get tangled and families have strong opinions. Help us remember that the wedding is one day, but the marriage is the thing we are truly preparing for.

Teach us to listen well, to speak kindly, and to keep Christ at the center of every choice, from the guest list to the budget. Guard our hearts from comparison with other couples and from pressure to make the day perfect. Let us grow closer to You and to each other while we wait. Be honest with us about our fears, and steady us where we feel unsure. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, we are engaged and we are a little overwhelmed. Slow our hearts down. Help us be kind to each other today, and give us wisdom for the next decision. Keep us close to You and to one another. Thank You for this new chapter, and for walking with us into it. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Pray this for the decisions you can see and the ones you cannot. Ask God to direct the small choices about venue, timing, and money as much as the large ones about where you will live.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Give thanks that you are not meant to face planning, families, and the years ahead alone. Pray that the two of you would be a real help to each other when one is tired or discouraged.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil; 6 doesn’t rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

(WEB)

Read this slowly with your partner in mind. Ask God to shape your patience and kindness in the moments when wedding stress makes them hard to find.

Colossians 3:12-14

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do. 14 Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection.

(WEB)

Pray for compassion, humility, and gentleness toward both families and toward each other. Ask that love would be the thread that holds everything together through the busy months.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Name the plans you are making and ask the Lord to build them. This verse reminds you that a home and a marriage rest on more than your own effort.

How to Pray This Prayer

A good time is the quiet of the early morning or the stillness before bed, when the phone is put away and the day’s logistics have settled. Sit or kneel in a place where you can speak without interruption, and keep a pen nearby in case a worry or a decision comes to mind that you want to bring back to God later.

Pray these words together with your partner if you can, holding hands or sitting side by side. If you are praying alone, consider asking a close friend or parent to pray the same prayer for the two of you. Revisit it whenever a new decision arrives, and let it become a steady rhythm during the engagement.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who brought you together keep you in His care through every season ahead. May He give you patience for the planning, joy in the small moments, and a love that grows deeper with each year. May you always find your home in Him and in each other.
