Daily prayers for small groups give a gathering of believers a shared way to bring their days before God. They work well at the start of a weekly meeting, at the close of a Bible study, or as a text sent each morning to keep the group connected between gatherings. Read the prayer below aloud as it is written, or use it as a starting point and add the names and needs of your own group.
Daily Prayers for Small Groups
Lord, thank you for the people gathered here, and for the simple fact that you have brought us together. Some of us are carrying heavy things today: a job that feels unstable, a child who has stopped answering our questions, a diagnosis we are still learning to say out loud. Some of us are simply tired and unsure how to show up for others when we have so little left. Meet each person in the room where they actually are, and let no one leave feeling that their trouble is too small or too much to bring to you.
Help us to listen well to one another. Give us patience when someone speaks slowly, tact when we disagree, and the humility to admit when we have been wrong. Keep us from using this group to compare ourselves or to show off what we know. Make our conversations safe enough that people can be honest, and make us faithful enough to keep what we hear in confidence. Where there is a need we cannot meet, show us how to pray for it persistently and to trust you with the outcome.
Lord, we ask that you would strengthen the bonds among us through this week. Remind us to check in on one another, to send the message or make the call, and to bring meals or help when it is needed. Use our small circle to show your love to people beyond it, and let our fellowship point others toward you. Hear us now as we pray together, and keep us close to you until we meet again. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, we come to you as a small group, each of us with our own weight and our own hopes. Be near to those who are anxious today, steady those who are grieving, and give wisdom to those who must decide. Help us to love one another in practical ways this week and to speak kindly when it is hard. Thank you for knowing each name in this circle. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”
(WEB)
Pray this verse at the start of a meeting to remind the group that Jesus is actually present among you. Ask him to make your gathering feel like more than a schedule, and to let each person sense that the Lord is listening.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10
9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.
(WEB)
Use this passage when someone in the group is struggling and others are unsure how to help. Thank God for companionship, and ask him to make your group a place where people are lifted up instead of left to fall alone.
Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
(WEB)
Pray this verse for the practical needs the group is facing this week. Ask God to show each person what burden they can carry, and to give the courage to ask for help when your own load grows heavy.
Romans 12:10
In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…
(WEB)
Pray this verse for the way the group treats one another in ordinary moments, not only in crisis. Ask the Holy Spirit to soften any irritation and to fill each conversation with genuine honor and warmth.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Read this passage slowly when the group feels pressed by worry about the future. Ask God to replace that anxiety with the kind of peace that guards the heart, and to let your prayers together become the place where that peace is received.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many groups find that the early morning works best for a daily prayer, especially if the group shares a text thread or a group message. Send the prayer or the key sentences to everyone at the same time each day, and invite people to pray silently wherever they are, whether at the kitchen table, on the bus, or during a lunch break. Keep a small list of names beside the prayer so you can add to it as needs come up in the group.
When you meet in person, consider holding something in your hands while you pray, such as a candle, a stone, or a sheet of paper with names written on it. Let each person hold the item for a moment, or pass a small cross or prayer card around the circle. Ask someone who is less comfortable praying aloud to read the opening sentence, and invite a different person each week to lead, so that the group grows together.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless each person in this group and keep them in his care. May he give them strength for the work ahead and rest for the weary places. May he make their friendships sturdy and their words kind, and may they go into the week knowing they are seen and held by God.
