BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This is a prayer for daily wisdom, a way to ask God for clear thinking, good judgment and the sense to know what to do with the hours ahead. It works well first thing in the morning, before the phone and the inbox take over, or in the car before a hard meeting or a difficult conversation. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words to the same requests.

Prayer for Daily Wisdom

Lord, I come to you before the day starts pulling at me. I do not know everything that is coming. I have a list of things to do, a few decisions I keep putting off, and people I love who need more from me than I feel I have to give. I ask you for wisdom to see what matters most today and the courage to let the rest go.

Give me wisdom in the small things: what to say when someone is upset, how to answer a text I would rather ignore, when to speak and when to listen. Help me weigh my choices about money, time and health with a clear head, not with fear or pressure. Where I am tempted to rush, slow me down. Where I am tempted to freeze, give me the next right step.

Show me where I have been relying on my own cleverness and need to trust you instead. Keep my heart honest, so I do not look for shortcuts or excuses. Let my words be kind and my decisions be fair. Go before me into this day, and help me walk in it with open eyes and a steady spirit. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I need wisdom right now, and I do not have time for a long prayer. Show me what to do next, what to say and what to leave alone. Quiet the noise in my head so I can hear you. Help me trust that you know the way through this hour and this day. Thank you that you give wisdom generously to anyone who asks. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God directly for the wisdom you lack, without apology. Notice the promise that he gives generously and without finding fault, which means you can keep coming back to him all day.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to name the place where you are tempted to lean on your own understanding. Ask God to make your paths straight, one decision at a time, as you bring each one to him.

Psalm 119:105

Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you feel uncertain about the next step. Ask God to light up only what you need to see for today, trusting that he will show you enough to take the next step.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

Thank God that wisdom comes from him and is not something you have to manufacture alone. Ask him to speak to you through his word and through the wise people he has placed around you.

Colossians 4:6

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for your words today, especially in conversations that could go badly. Ask God to make your speech gracious and seasoned, so that people leave a little better for having talked with you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version while you sit with your first cup of coffee or tea, before you open your phone. Keep a pen nearby so that when God brings a specific decision to mind, you can write it down and return to it later in the day. If your hands need something to do, hold a small object like a stone or a ring, and let it remind you to pause before you react.

You might also pray this prayer with a spouse, a friend or a coworker who is facing a hard week. Read it together over the phone or at breakfast, and then ask each other what decision feels heaviest. Praying wisdom for someone else often brings clarity to your own situation as well.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you wisdom for the choices in front of you today, and the patience to wait for his direction when the answer is not yet clear. May he guard your heart in every conversation and steady your hands in every task. May you walk through this day knowing that you are never without his guidance.
