BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

These prayers are written for the moment when you need to make a wise choice and cannot yet see the right path. You can pray the longer prayer in a quiet place before a decision, or the shorter one in the middle of a busy day. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words about the specific choice in front of you.

Prayers for Making Wise Choices

Father, you know the decision in front of me better than I do. I bring it to you now, with its tangled details, the people it touches, and the fear that I will choose badly and live with the cost. I do not want to act out of pressure, impatience, or the wish to make the discomfort stop. Slow my thinking where it is rushed, and steady my heart where it is anxious. Show me what is true, what is good, and what is merely appealing for the moment.

Give me wisdom that is more than cleverness. Help me weigh the options honestly, to notice my own motives, and to listen to counsel from people who love me and fear you. Where I have been unclear, bring light. Where I have been stubborn, soften me. If one path is wrong, close it gently, and if another is right, help me walk toward it without looking back in regret. I trust that you are not hiding your will from those who ask for it. Lead me, and let my choice honor you and bless the people I love. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need wisdom right now, and I do not have much time to think. Guard my mouth, my hands, and my next step. Keep me from acting in haste or in fear. Show me the right thing to do, and give me the courage to do it. Let my choice be one that reflects your goodness and protects the people who depend on me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific decision you face and asking God, by name, for the wisdom you lack. James promises generous giving, so you can ask without embarrassment. Then pause and listen for the next sensible step rather than rushing to fill the silence.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to hand your own reasoning over to God. Confess where you have been leaning on what you already believe or what feels safest. Ask him to make your paths straight, trusting that his direction matters more than the certainty you crave.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a request to be taught and guided at each turn. Ask God to instruct you about this decision, to keep his eye on you, and to correct you early if you drift. Let the promise of his watchful care steady you while you wait for clarity.

Proverbs 2:6

For the LORD gives wisdom. Out of his mouth comes knowledge and understanding.

(WEB)

Read this verse as a reminder that wisdom comes from the Lord, not from our own cleverness. Thank God that understanding is a gift he gives, and ask him to give you the knowledge and discernment you need before you decide.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to renew the way you think, so that your choices grow out of his truth rather than the pressures of the moment. Ask him to help you test what is good, pleasing, and perfect, and to let your mind be reshaped by his will.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you are least rushed, such as early in the morning or during a short walk, and pray the longer prayer aloud if you can. Write the decision on a piece of paper and place it in front of you. Speaking the choice out loud often clarifies it, and it reminds you to bring the actual details to God instead of a vague worry.

Ask a trusted friend, mentor, or family member to pray with you or for you, especially if the decision affects them. Keep your hands busy with something simple, like folding them, opening them in a posture of receiving, or writing down what you sense God is showing you. Return to the shorter prayer whenever the pressure rises again through the day.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give wisdom to the one who is seeking it, and clear light for each step ahead. May he guard the heart that is weighing hard choices and keep it at peace. May the path that is chosen lead toward goodness, and may the one who chooses walk in confidence that God is faithful.
