A simple prayer for the future is a short, honest way to hand tomorrow, next year, and the years beyond them to God. It is most helpful in the quiet of a morning, at a turning point such as a new job or a move, or late at night when worry about what is coming keeps you awake. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Simple Prayer for the Future

Lord, I do not know what the coming weeks and years will hold. I see only a small part of the road, and some of what I see frightens me. Thank you that you already know every step ahead of me. Please go before me into the decisions I have to make about work, money, health, and the people I love. Give me wisdom when I cannot see the answer, and give me patience when the answer takes longer than I would like.

I bring you my plans, and I ask you to shape them according to your will. Where I am pursuing something that is not good for me, close the door gently. Where you are opening a door I have been afraid to walk through, give me courage. Guard my children, my parents, and my friends as they face their own unknown days. Keep my heart from hurrying ahead of you, and keep my hands busy with what is mine to do today. Teach me to trust you one day at a time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you hold the future as well as the present. I give you tomorrow, and the months I cannot yet see. Go before me in each decision. Give me the wisdom to choose well, the courage to act when I am afraid, and the peace to rest in you while I wait. Help me trust your timing and your care for the people I love. Amen.

Use this passage when anxiety about tomorrow wants to take over your thoughts. Bring each worry to God in prayer and ask him to guard your heart and mind with his peace.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer first thing in the morning, before the messages and news begin to fill your mind. Sit somewhere quiet, such as a chair by a window or at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee. Keeping a pen nearby can help, so you can write down one specific concern you are handing over to God, and return to that note later in the week.

If you are praying for a family member, a friend, or a child who faces a difficult season ahead, you can read this prayer together or pray it on their behalf. Speak their name in place of “my children” or “the people I love,” and let the prayer become a shared act of trust. Many people find that a small weekly time of praying for the future with someone else steadies both of them.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every day still to come, and may he be your guide when the way is unclear. May he give you wisdom for each choice and peace in each waiting season. May you walk forward with courage, knowing that the God who holds the future also holds you.
