BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Bible verses about children, gathered for parents, grandparents, teachers, foster carers and anyone who loves a young person and wants Scripture close at hand. The verses below show God’s care for children, the weight of raising them well, and the trust that a child’s life is held in God’s hands. They share one thread: the young are seen, valued and entrusted to God and to the adults who love them.

Verses for a Child’s Place in God’s Heart

Scripture does not treat children as an afterthought. These passages show Jesus welcoming them and God counting them as precious. Read them when a child’s worth feels hard to see, whether in your own home or in a classroom full of restless faces.

Mark 10:14

But when Jesus saw it, he was moved with indignation, and said to them, “Allow the little children to come to me! Don’t forbid them, for God’s Kingdom belongs to such as these.

(WEB)

Jesus was indignant when his disciples turned children away, which tells you where his heart lies. Before the next school run or bedtime argument, picture him saying the same words over the child in front of you. Let that shape how you speak to them today.

Matthew 18:5

Whoever receives one such little child in my name receives me…

(WEB)

Jesus identifies himself with the small and the lowly, so welcoming a child is welcoming him. When a child asks for help you are tempted to brush off, pause and treat the request as a chance to serve Christ. Small kindnesses count.

Psalm 127:3

Behold, children are a heritage of the LORD. The fruit of the womb is his reward.

(WEB)

The psalmist calls children a heritage from the Lord, a gift rather than a burden. On a tiring day, name one thing about your child that you are grateful for. Thanking God for them often softens frustration and makes space for patience.

Verses on Raising Children Well

These passages speak to the daily work of training a child in faith and character. They are written to parents and mentors, but anyone shaping a young life can receive them. Use them to think about what you model as much as what you say.

Proverbs 22:6

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.

(WEB)

This proverb speaks of training a child in the way they should go, a long-term work done through steady repetition. Choose one habit of faith you can build together this week, such as a short prayer at breakfast. Small, faithful patterns shape a child over years.

Deuteronomy 6:6-7

6 These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; 7 and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up.

(WEB)

Moses tells parents to talk about God’s commands at home, on the road, when lying down and rising up. Faith is meant to be woven into ordinary days. Pick one ordinary moment, like the drive to school, and mention something God has done.

Ephesians 6:4

You fathers, don’t provoke your children to wrath, but nurture them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

(WEB)

Paul warns fathers not to provoke their children to anger but to bring them up in discipline and instruction of the Lord. Correction and kindness belong together. When you correct a child today, ask whether your tone matches the grace you have received.

Colossians 3:21

Fathers, don’t provoke your children, so that they won’t be discouraged.

(WEB)

Paul cautions parents against discouraging their children so they lose heart. Encouragement is part of faithful parenting. Look for one honest word of praise to give your child before the day ends, especially about effort rather than only results.

Verses for Trusting God With Your Children

Every parent and carer reaches the limit of what they can control. These verses point you to the God who holds your children when you cannot. Read them during worry at night, after a hard phone call, or while waiting for news.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

The psalmist says the Lord keeps you from harm and watches over your going out and coming in. When fear rises about a child’s safety, say these words slowly as a prayer. Entrusting them to God does not mean doing nothing, but it does mean setting down what you cannot carry.

Isaiah 54:13

All your children will be taught by the LORD; and your children’s peace will be great.

(WEB)

Isaiah promises that God will teach your children, and great will be their peace. Pray this over a child who is struggling to learn or to settle. Ask God to be their teacher in ways you cannot reach.

Isaiah 49:15

“Can a woman forget her nursing child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? Yes, these may forget, yet I will not forget you!

(WEB)

God asks whether a mother can forget her nursing child, and then answers that he will not forget his people. When you feel you have failed a child, remember that God’s care is steadier than any human love. Rest in that faithfulness.

Psalm 103:13

Like a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him.

(WEB)

The psalm says the Lord has compassion on his children as a father has compassion on his own. Use this as a reminder of God’s tenderness toward you and toward the children you love. Let it soften how you respond when a child disappoints you.

Verses for Hard Days With Children

Some seasons with children are exhausting, grieving or uncertain. These passages offer steadiness for those moments. Keep them where you can find them quickly, on a note or in a bag you carry.

Matthew 19:14

But Jesus said, “Allow the little children, and don’t forbid them to come to me; for the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to ones like these.”

(WEB)

Jesus says to let the children come to him and not to hinder them. When a child is struggling to come to God, perhaps through doubt or grief, gently make room for them. Your role is to open the door, not to force the way.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. If a child is hurting, or you are carrying their pain, let this verse name God’s presence in that place. Sit with them and remind them that God sees.

Isaiah 40:11

He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arm, and carry them in his bosom. He will gently lead those who have their young.

(WEB)

Isaiah pictures God as a shepherd who gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close. Imagine that tender gathering over a child who is tired or frightened. Then hold them in your own arms in the same spirit.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Lamentations reminds you that God’s mercies are new every morning. A hard night with a child does not have the final word. Greet the next morning with fresh hope and let the child meet a calmer version of you.

How to Use These Verses

Write a few of these verses on cards and place them where children and adults will see them, such as the fridge, the bathroom mirror or the front of a school planner. Choose one verse each week to read aloud at a family meal or before bed. Repetition helps Scripture settle into the everyday rhythm of your home.

You can also pray these verses over specific children by name. Read the verse slowly, then speak its truth back to God in your own words. Keep a short list of children you are praying for, and return to the verses when you feel anxious or worn out.

A Short Prayer for Children

Heavenly Father, thank you that you welcome children and count them as precious in your sight. I bring to you the young people in my life, the ones I love and the ones I am trying to guide. Give me patience when I am weary, wisdom when I do not know what to say, and gentleness when correction is needed. Let them see your faithfulness in the way I live. Keep them safe, teach them your ways, and draw them close to you all their days. Amen.
