A prayer for compassion asks God to soften your heart so you can see others the way He sees them, with patience, tenderness and a willingness to act. It is especially helpful when irritation has crowded out kindness, when you are tired of people’s needs, or when a hard situation has made you want to look away. Pray it in the morning before the day’s demands arrive, or in the middle of a moment when you feel your patience running thin. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for Compassion

Lord, you have shown me mercy again and again, even when I did not deserve it. Please let that mercy flow out of me toward the people around me. Open my eyes to the ones I have been quick to judge: the coworker who snapped at me, the family member who keeps repeating the same struggle, the stranger whose hurry or hardship I have only noticed as an inconvenience. Give me the patience to listen before I respond and the humility to remember that everyone carries something I cannot see.

Father, I confess that my heart can grow hard when I feel stretched or unappreciated. Soften it again. Replace my impatience with a gentle attentiveness, and my self-protection with a genuine desire to help. When I am tempted to walk past someone in need, remind me of the times you stopped for me. Let my words be kind, my hands be willing and my attention be real. Where I cannot fix a person’s pain, let me at least bring them your presence through a sincere word, a quiet prayer or a simple act of care.

Thank you that your compassion never runs out, and that you do not wait for me to feel ready before you act. Work through me today in ways both small and large. Make me slower to anger and quicker to notice those who are hurting. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, soften my heart right now. Show me the person in front of me as you see them, tired, hurting or simply needing kindness. Take away my irritation and give me patience, gentleness and the right words. Help me to act with love in this moment. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:12

Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance…

(WEB)

Paul names compassion first in a list of qualities God’s people should put on like clothing. Pray this verse by asking God to dress you each morning in tenderness, so that compassion becomes the habit you reach for before irritation does.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses remind us that God’s mercies are renewed every morning. When your compassion feels spent, pray this passage to receive fresh mercy from Him, so you have something new to give others.

Micah 6:8

He has shown you, O man, what is good. What does the LORD require of you, but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?

(WEB)

Micah summarizes what the Lord asks of His people in plain terms: act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. Pray it by asking God to make mercy a natural love in you rather than a duty you drag yourself through.

Matthew 9:36

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion for them, because they were harassed and scattered, like sheep without a shepherd.

(WEB)

Jesus looked at the crowds and felt compassion because they were weary and scattered. Pray this verse by asking Him to let you see people the way He did, as those who need shepherding and care.

Ephesians 4:32

And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you.

(WEB)

Paul connects kindness and tender-heartedness to forgiveness in Christ. Pray it when resentment is blocking your compassion, asking God to help you extend to others the same grace you have received.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when you can slow down, such as early in the morning with a cup of coffee, during a short drive before work, or at the kitchen sink while your hands are busy. Keep a printed copy of the short version on your phone or in your wallet, so you can pray it the moment you notice your patience thinning. Writing a few names beside the prayer can help you bring specific people to God, such as a difficult relative, a struggling neighbor or someone in your church who is grieving.

Consider praying this prayer with someone else, whether a spouse, a friend or a small group. Hearing another person ask God for compassion can remind you that you are not alone in struggling with it. After you pray, take one small, concrete step toward someone: a phone call, a meal, a listening ear or a note of encouragement. Compassion grows most when it moves from prayer into action.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who has shown you such patient mercy fill your heart with tenderness toward others today. May He give you eyes that notice the hurting, ears that truly listen and hands that are quick to help. May His compassion flow through you to everyone you meet.
