This prayer is for the community you live in: your neighbors, your town or street, the schools, workplaces and local services that shape daily life, and the people who are struggling in ways you may not see. It can be prayed in the morning, at a family meal, on a walk through your neighborhood, or whenever news of a local need reaches you. You can read it aloud as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart leads.
Prayer for Our Community
Lord, you know the people who live around us by name, even when we do not. You know the family on the corner who is working two jobs and running out of rest, the older neighbor who lives alone and rarely hears a knock at the door, and the young people who are trying to find their footing in a world that moves too fast. Be near to each of them today. Give them enough food, enough safety, and enough hope to get through the day with some dignity.
We ask for wisdom and integrity for those who lead our town, our school boards, our police and fire crews, our hospitals and our shops. Keep them honest when no one is watching and humble when they are praised. Let the decisions made in this place be fair to the poor as well as the comfortable. Heal the divisions that make neighbors suspicious of one another, and help us to speak to each other with patience instead of contempt. Where there is grief, comfort the grieving. Where there is illness, bring healing or the peace that comes with your presence. Where there is loneliness, let someone come to the door with a warm meal or a kind word. Make us willing to be that someone. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, you see our town from above and you love every street in it. Watch over the families who are struggling, the leaders who are carrying heavy decisions, and the neighbors who feel forgotten. Give us eyes to notice the needs around us and the courage to respond. Let our community be a place where people are known, cared for, and welcomed. Amen.

Seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

Matthew 5:14-16
14 You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do you light a lamp, and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. 16 Even so, let your light shine before men; that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
(WEB)
Pray this passage for your neighborhood to shine with honest, visible goodness. Ask that your community would reflect God’s light through ordinary acts of care, so that others see something worth glorifying.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a regular time to pray for your community, such as a few minutes after you have your morning coffee or while you walk past the same houses each evening. Let your eyes travel as you pray: look out the window at the rooftops, the school, or the street where children play. Naming specific places and people turns a general request into a real intercession. Keep a short list on your phone of local needs you hear about, so you can bring them back to God in the days ahead.
This prayer also works well shared with others. A small group from church, a family around the dinner table, or a few neighbors meeting on a porch can take turns reading one paragraph each. You might end by asking one person in the group to act on a need that was named, such as dropping off groceries, volunteering at a food pantry, or attending a town meeting. Prayer that leads to a small, faithful action is often the kind that changes a place over time.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who knows every household in your town keep watch over your community and over you within it. May he grant peace in the streets, wisdom in the halls of leadership, and comfort in every home where sorrow lingers. May he make you a steady light to your neighbors, and may the place you call home be known for kindness, justice and hope.
