BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This bedtime prayer for joy is written for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and your mind is still replaying conversations, deadlines and small disappointments. It asks God to lift the weight you have carried and to give you a settled gladness that can rest with you through the night. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Bedtime Prayer for Joy

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and some of it left me tired or short-tempered. I thank you for the moments that made me smile, for the meal I shared, for the work that got done, and for the people who showed me kindness when I did not expect it. Help me to notice those gifts now, before I close my eyes, so that gratitude can settle in my heart where worry has been sitting.

I confess that joy has felt far away lately. I have been waiting on answers, carrying concerns about my family and my health, and wondering whether things will ever feel light again. Please meet me in that place. Remind me that your joy is not something I must manufacture by trying harder. Let it come as a quiet gift, the way morning light comes through the blinds without any effort on my part. Take my anxious thoughts one at a time and set them down in your hands.

Watch over me while I sleep. Guard my rest and my dreams, and keep the people I love in your care tonight. When I wake, let me meet the morning with a little more hope than I had last night. I trust you with what I could not finish today, and with what I cannot yet see. Give me joy that holds steady in the dark as well as the light. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am tired, and my heart feels heavy tonight. Thank you for this day, even the hard parts. Fill me with a quiet joy that does not depend on how things turned out. Calm my thoughts, guard my sleep, and let me rest in your faithful care until morning. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Read this slowly as you lie down, letting it become your own statement of trust. Pray that God would give you the peace to sleep, not because every problem is solved, but because you are kept by him. Let the rest itself become an act of trust.

Psalm 30:5

For his anger is but for a moment. His favor is for a lifetime. Weeping may stay for the night, but joy comes in the morning.

(WEB)

Use this verse to name the night you are in and ask God to hold it. Pray that the joy promised in the morning would begin to take root in your heart now, even before the sun comes up.

Psalm 16:11

You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to show you the path of life, which means the ordinary path you will walk tomorrow. Ask that his presence would fill you with gladness that does not depend on circumstances.

Nehemiah 8:10

Then he said to them, “Go your way. Eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to him for whom nothing is prepared, for today is holy to our Lord. Don’t be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”

(WEB)

Pray this for the strength to keep going when you feel depleted. Ask God to renew your joy as a source of strength, so that you can rest without guilt and wake with a steadier spirit.

Philippians 4:7

And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring the specific worries of your day to God and pray this verse over them one by one. Ask that his peace, which is larger than you can understand, would guard your heart and mind while you sleep.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this at the end of the day, once the lights are low and your phone is set aside. Sitting on the edge of your bed or lying down with a hand on your chest can help your body settle while your words catch up. If your mind wanders, go back to the line about gratitude and let it anchor you again.

You might also pray it with someone who shares your home, or with a friend you call at night. Taking turns reading lines aloud can make the prayer feel shared rather than solitary. Keep a small notebook by the bed and jot down one thing you are grateful for, then read the prayer over that note as you drift off.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who keeps watch over his people grant rest to your body and quiet to your mind tonight. May his joy meet you in the stillness, steady and kind, and go with you into the morning. Sleep well, knowing you are held.
