This simple prayer for self control is for the moments when your words, appetites, temper or habits seem to run ahead of your good intentions. It is best prayed when you feel the pull toward something you already know you should not do, or in the quiet of the morning as you ask God for steadiness for the day. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own struggles into your own words.

Simple Prayer for Self Control

Lord, you know how quickly I reach for what is easy and how often I act before I think. You know the sharp word I want to say, the second helping I do not need, the phone I keep picking up, and the anger that rises faster than my patience. I am tired of being pulled around by my own impulses. Please help me slow down long enough to choose what is good instead of what is merely satisfying right now.

Holy Spirit, work in the places where my willpower has failed. Give me a pause between the urge and the action, and let that pause be filled with your presence. Remind me of the people I love who will be affected by what I do next, and of the person you are shaping me to become. When I fall short, do not let me hide or despair, but bring me back to you quickly and honestly. Let your patience grow in me a little more each day. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am feeling pulled toward something I know I should not do. Give me the strength to stop, breathe and wait before I speak or act. Fill the space where my impulse wants to rush with your peace, and help me choose what honors you and blesses the people around me. Thank you that you help me when I cannot help myself. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Paul names self-control as one of the fruits the Spirit produces in a believer. When you pray this, ask the Spirit to grow that fruit in you rather than trying to manufacture it through effort alone.

Proverbs 25:28

Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.

(WEB)

This proverb pictures a city with broken walls, open to any attack. Pray that God would rebuild the walls of your own heart so that your life is guarded and not exposed to every passing temptation.

1 Corinthians 9:25

Every man who strives in the games exercises self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible.

(WEB)

Paul compares the Christian life to an athlete who trains with discipline for a lasting prize. Pray for the commitment to train your habits daily, trusting God to give the endurance you lack.

Romans 7:19

For the good which I desire, I don’t do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice.

(WEB)

Paul admits the gap between what he wants to do and what he actually does. Bring that honesty to God in prayer, asking him to close the gap and to meet you in your failures with mercy.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

This verse reminds us that strength for hard things comes from Christ rather than from ourselves. Pray it as an admission that you cannot do this alone and a request that his strength would carry you through this moment.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time to pray it, such as first thing in the morning or just before a meal or a stretch of work where you usually struggle. Keep a printed copy somewhere you will see it, like the kitchen counter, your car dashboard or the cover of your phone case. Praying with your hands can help too: open them slowly on the words “help me stop” and let them rest, as if you are setting something down.

You might also pray this prayer with a friend, spouse or small group who can ask you how the week went. Share one specific area where you want change, and ask them to pray with you about it. Self control often grows fastest in community, where honesty is safe and encouragement comes regularly.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gave his Spirit to you fill you with steadiness and wisdom for each hour. May he give you a quiet pause before every hasty word and a clear heart in every decision. May you rest in the grace that meets you when you fall, and rise again with courage to walk in his good ways.
