BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

This prayer is written for the day of a baptism, whether you are praying for a baby being dedicated through baptism, a child or teenager making a personal profession of faith, or an adult choosing to follow Jesus in the waters. Pray it in the days leading up to the service, in the car on the way there, or quietly as you stand near the baptistry. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Blessings for Baptisms

Lord, thank you for this day and for the person who is about to be baptized. Thank you that baptism is not something they earn but a gift of your grace, a sign of the new life you have already begun in them. Be near them as the water touches their face and their heart. If they feel nervous, steady their breathing. If they feel overwhelmed by what this means, remind them that you are the one who holds them, not their own strength or their own understanding.

Father, we ask that this moment would mark something real and lasting. Let the people who gather to watch remember their own baptism, and let them be encouraged by your faithfulness. For the family and friends who have prayed for this person for years, let them see the fruit of that patience and love. Guard this young heart, or this grown one, from discouragement in the months ahead, and help them find a community that will walk with them. We trust you with what comes after the water, Lord, because you have never left anyone you have called.

Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, bless the one who is being baptized today. Wash them in your grace, settle their heart, and let this day be a clear sign of your claim on their life. Surround them with people who will encourage their faith, and let them know they belong to you now and always. Thank you for your faithfulness. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Romans 6:4

We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the person being baptized, asking that they would live in the reality of the new life Christ has given them. Baptism shows what God has already done, so let your prayer thank him for that work and ask him to shape their daily choices to match it.

Galatians 3:27

For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

(WEB)

Use this verse to pray that the one being baptized would clearly know their identity in Christ. Ask God to remind them, especially in hard seasons, that they have been united with him and are fully his.

Psalm 23:1-3

1 The LORD is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. 3 He restores my soul. He guides me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

(WEB)

Pray these lines for the new believer’s ongoing walk. Ask the Shepherd to lead them to places of rest and renewal, so their faith is sustained not only by a single day but by steady care over many years.

Isaiah 43:1

But now the LORD who created you, Jacob, and he who formed you, Israel says: “Don’t be afraid, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by your name. You are mine.

(WEB)

Speak this promise over the person being baptized as a prayer of reassurance. Ask God to make them deeply aware that they are known by name, and that their place in his family is secure whatever they face.

Matthew 28:19-20

19 Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

Pray this passage for the community around the new believer. Ask God to equip the church and their family to teach and encourage them, and to keep Jesus’ presence with them as they grow.

How to Pray This Prayer

Consider praying this prayer early on the morning of the baptism, while the house is quiet and before the day gets busy. Sit somewhere you can be still, and hold something in your hands, such as a Bible, a cup of coffee, or the hand of the person being baptized if they are old enough to welcome it. Let the physical act of holding something anchor your attention on God rather than on the schedule.

You might also invite others to pray it with you, perhaps a parent, grandparent, pastor, or close friend. Read the main prayer together, then let each person add a sentence of thanks. Praying as a group reminds everyone that this step of faith is held up by a whole community, not one person alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless and keep the one who has been baptized. May his face shine on them and give them peace, and may they walk in the new life he has given them all their days.
