This list gives you Bible verses to read on a birthday, whether it is your own, a child’s, a spouse’s, or a friend’s you want to remember well. The verses are grouped by the moods a birthday tends to bring: gratitude for another year, honest reflection on the years behind, and hope for the year ahead. Each one points to God as the steady giver of days, so the celebration rests on something more durable than the cake.

Verses of Gratitude for Another Year of Life

Birthdays often begin with a quiet thought that another year has been given. These verses turn that thought toward thanks and remind you that every day is a gift rather than a right.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

This is a good verse to read aloud over breakfast on your birthday. Pick one specific thing from the past year you are thankful for, and name it before you begin the day.

Psalm 90:12

So teach us to count our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

(WEB)

Moses asks God to teach us to count our days so that we gain a wise heart. On a birthday, that is an invitation to slow down and consider how you want to spend the next twelve months, not just how many you have lived.

James 1:17

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.

(WEB)

James describes every good gift as coming from above. Write down three good things from your year and treat them as gifts from the Father of lights, not only as results of your own effort.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These verses speak of mercies that are new every morning. If your birthday brings mixed feelings, this passage offers a reason to start the new year on the ground of God’s faithfulness instead of your own performance.

Verses for Reflecting on the Years Behind You

Some birthdays bring grief, regret, or a sharp sense of how much time has passed. These verses give you permission to look back honestly while keeping your eyes on the God who has walked through each season with you.

Psalm 71:5-6

5 For you are my hope, Lord the LORD; my confidence from my youth. 6 I have relied on you from the womb. You are he who took me out of my mother’s womb. I will always praise you.

(WEB)

The psalmist speaks of God as his hope from youth and his support from birth. Reflect on one season of your life where God was faithful even though you did not recognize it at the time.

Psalm 139:13-14

13 For you formed my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well.

(WEB)

David confesses that he was fearfully and wonderfully made. On a birthday, this is a good verse to read when you feel dissatisfied with your body, your age, or your story, because it grounds your worth in how God made you.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Paul says that even as the outer self wastes away, the inner self is renewed day by day. If you are feeling the weight of years, let this verse shift your attention to the quiet growth God is doing within you.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

God promises to carry his people even into old age and gray hair. Whatever your age, this verse assures you that God’s care does not depend on your stage of life, and you can thank him for carrying you so far.

Verses of Hope for the Year Ahead

A new year of life is also a new set of unknowns. These verses point you forward, not with promises of ease, but with assurance of God’s presence and purpose in what is still to come.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says the LORD, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.

(WEB)

God speaks these words to exiles who could not see their future clearly. Write this verse on a card and place it where you will see it on the morning of your birthday as a reminder that God’s plans are good even when they are not yet visible.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Trust the Lord with all your heart and acknowledge him in all your ways. Choose one decision you face in the coming year and commit it to God in prayer before you make it.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul is confident that the God who began a good work will carry it on to completion. On your birthday, name one area where you long for growth and entrust it to God, trusting that he is still working on you.

Romans 8:28

We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God works all things together for good for those who love him. Remember a hard season from last year that now looks different in hindsight, and let it encourage you as you face the year ahead.

Psalm 16:11

You will show me the path of life. In your presence is fullness of joy. In your right hand there are pleasures forever more.

(WEB)

The psalmist finds fullness of joy in God’s presence. Spend part of your birthday in simple, unhurried time with God, letting his presence be the best part of the day.

How to Use These Verses

You might write two or three of these verses on a card and tuck it into a birthday card you give or receive, or place it on a mirror, a planner, or a phone lock screen. Reading a verse aloud at the start or end of the day helps it settle into memory better than scanning a list once. If you are celebrating someone else, consider reading one verse together over a meal and asking what it means to each person at the table.

Use these passages as prayers as well as reading. Turn a verse into a sentence addressed to God, such as “Lord, thank you for this year” or “Father, help me trust you with what comes next.” Revisit the same verse on future birthdays to notice how your understanding has grown with your years.

A Short Prayer for Birthdays

Lord, thank you for the gift of another year. You have been faithful through every season I have lived, including the ones I did not understand at the time. Help me to receive this day with gratitude, to look back on the past with honesty and trust, and to face the coming year with open hands. Remind me that my days are in your keeping and that you are still writing my story with care. Amen.
