This daily prayer for self control is for the moments when your words, appetites, temper or habits seem to move faster than your good intentions. Pray it in the morning before the day starts pulling at you, or return to it whenever you feel yourself slipping. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own honest words where they fit.

Daily Prayer for Self Control

Lord, you know how quickly I reach for what I want before I have thought about what is right. You know the words I regret saying, the second helping I did not need, the screen I keep opening when I meant to be present, and the sharp reply I rehearse long after the conversation has ended. I do not want to live by impulse. Give me a steady heart this day, so that I can pause before I speak, act or consume, and choose what honors you.

Holy Spirit, you produce self-control in those who ask for it. I ask now for that fruit to grow in me. Slow my hands when they want to grab, quiet my mouth when it wants to win, and loosen the grip of habits that have held me longer than I want to admit. When I feel tempted, remind me that you are near and that you give strength where I have none. Help me take the next small right step, even when the wrong one feels easier.

Father, I also confess that I cannot do this by willpower alone, and I do not need to pretend otherwise. Forgive me where I have failed, and receive me again without shame when I stumble later today. Teach me to bring my restlessness to you before I bring it to anyone else. Keep my body, mind and tongue under your gentle direction, and let my self-control become a quiet witness to your patience with me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I feel the pull to act before I think. Slow me down right now. Put a guard over my mouth, my hands and my attention. Help me take one breath and wait on you before I move. Give me the strength of your Spirit for the next minute, and then the next. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Galatians 5:22-23

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, 23 gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

(WEB)

Pray these verses by asking God to grow the fruit of his Spirit in you, self-control included. Notice that self-control is listed among gifts God produces, not only a discipline you must manufacture alone.

Proverbs 25:28

Like a city that is broken down and without walls is a man whose spirit is without restraint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by thinking of a place where you have lost control and asking God to rebuild the walls around it. The image of a broken city shows how exposed a life becomes without restraint.

1 Corinthians 10:13

No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

(WEB)

Read this verse as a promise for the next temptation you face. Thank God that he provides a way through each test, and ask him to show you that way today.

James 1:19

So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger…

(WEB)

Pray this verse for the conversations that tend to go wrong. Ask God to give you quickness to listen, slowness to speak and patience when your temper rises.

Romans 8:26

In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.

(WEB)

Use this verse when you feel too weak to pray well. Trust that the Spirit helps with what you cannot put into words, including the struggle for restraint.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this prayer in the first ten minutes of the day, before checking messages or turning on the news. Sit at the kitchen table or in a quiet chair with a cup of something warm, and keep a hand open on your lap to remind you to receive rather than grasp. If your phone is the place where you lose control most often, leave it in another room while you pray.

You might also ask someone you trust to pray this prayer with you, or to check in with you in the evening. A friend or spouse who knows your particular struggles can pray with specific honesty and hold you accountable with grace. Return to the shorter version whenever you feel tension rising, and let each small pause become an act of trust in God.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give steadiness to the one who prays for self control today. May his Spirit guard the heart, the tongue and the hands, and may every small choice toward restraint become a place where God’s peace is found. Go in quiet strength, knowing you are held.
