BIBLEREADER // ISABELLA WALKER

These daily prayers for students are written for the ordinary and the stressful parts of school life: the early alarm, the anxious walk into an exam room, the long evening of homework and the friendships that get complicated. Pray them in the morning before the day begins, or at night when the day is done. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Daily Prayers for Students

Lord, I come to you before my day starts. You know the schedule waiting for me: the classes I have to get through, the test I have been dreading, the reading list that keeps growing. Help me to show up with a clear mind and a willing heart. Give me the focus to listen in class, the patience to work through hard problems, and the honesty to ask for help when I need it.

Father, I also bring you the people around me. Be near the friends I sit with at lunch and the classmates who seem to have it all together but may be struggling too. Keep me kind when I feel tired or frustrated, and steady when someone else is unkind to me. Where I have been comparing myself to others, remind me that you made me on purpose and that my worth does not rise or fall with my grades. Let my work be honest and my effort be given to you. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am nervous and my mind is racing. Calm me down and help me think clearly. Bring to mind what I have studied, and let me trust that you are with me in this room, this hallway and this moment. Give me the courage to take the next step, whatever it is. Thank you for being with me right now. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

When your coursework feels confusing, pray these words as a way of handing over your need to understand. Ask God to guide the choices you make about study time, friendships and what to do after school.

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

Before a difficult test or an assignment you do not know how to start, bring this verse to God. Ask for wisdom and trust that he is generous in giving it to people who ask.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

When worry about grades or the future keeps you awake, use this passage to turn each anxious thought into a specific prayer. Thank God for what is going well, then bring him the things you are afraid of.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

On a hard day, when school or home or friendships feel like too much, pray this verse slowly. Name the place of refuge you need from God, and ask him to be that shelter for you right now.

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

When you feel tempted to cut corners or work only for a grade, pray this verse to refocus your effort. Ask God to help you do each assignment as if you were doing it for him.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many students find it helps to pray in the same spot each morning, such as the kitchen table while eating breakfast, or a chair beside the bed before you pick up your phone. Keep your bag or your planner in view so the prayer is tied to the day ahead. A pencil or a sticky note can help too: write one of the lines on a card and keep it in your backpack or near your study desk.

If you are praying with a parent, sibling or friend, take turns reading the prayer aloud and let each person add one request from their own week. A teacher or youth leader who knows you may also be willing to pray for your studies. Praying with someone else can remind you that you are not carrying school alone.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into every classroom and every exam, and walk beside you through every long afternoon of study. May he give you a clear mind, a kind heart and the peace to rest when your work is done. May you know that you are seen, known and loved in all of it.
