This evening prayer for generosity is written for the end of the day, when you are tired and thinking back over what you gave, what you held back, and what you wish you had done differently. You can pray it at the kitchen table, in bed, or in the car before you go inside. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where your day calls for them.
Evening Prayer for Generosity
Lord, thank you for this day and for everything in it that was good. Thank you for the food on our table, the roof over our heads, and the people who shared their time and attention with me. Before I sleep, I bring you the moments when I was generous and the moments when I was not. Where I gave freely, let that gift be an offering to you. Where I held tight to my money, my time, or my patience, forgive me and soften my heart.
Father, I confess that generosity does not come naturally to me. I worry about running short, about what will happen if I give away too much, and I compare what I have with what others seem to have. Tonight I release those fears into your hands. You are the one who supplies all I need, and you have never run out. Help me to trust that what I open my hand to give is never lost in your keeping.
Show me, tomorrow, one specific way to be open-handed: a word of encouragement, a meal shared, a gift given quietly, or a need I can meet without being asked. Keep me from giving to be seen, and give me the joy of giving simply because you have been so generous to me. Guard my sleep tonight and wake me with a willing heart. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, you have given me far more than I deserve. Loosen my grip on what is mine and teach me to hold it lightly. Show me one person I can bless tomorrow, and give me the courage to do it. Thank you for your faithful provision today and every day. Let me rest tonight knowing you are generous with me, and make me generous with others. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Proverbs 11:25
The liberal soul shall be made fat. He who waters shall be watered also himself.
(WEB)
Read this verse slowly at the end of the day and ask God to show you where you have refreshed someone else. Let it remind you that generosity is not a loss but a way of being watered yourself.
2 Corinthians 9:7
Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart; not grudgingly, or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver.
(WEB)
Pray this verse when you feel pressure to give more than you can, or guilt over what you did not give. Ask God to make your giving willing and cheerful, rooted in gratitude rather than obligation.
Acts 20:35
In all things I gave you an example, that so laboring you ought to help the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”
(WEB)
Bring this verse before the Lord as you think back over the day. Ask him to help you believe that the giving you did today brought a blessing you may not yet see.
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Use this verse as you lie down to rest. Give the day’s worries to the Lord and thank him that you can sleep in his safe keeping, free from the fear that you must provide for everything yourself.
Luke 6:38
“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.”
(WEB)
Pray this verse for the people who will receive what you give tomorrow. Ask God to bring back to you the blessings that come from giving freely, and to keep you from measuring your generosity by what you get in return.
How to Pray This Prayer
Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn off the light, while the house is quiet. If you can, sit on the edge of your bed or stand at a window and look out at the dark, which can help you remember how much of your day was in God’s hands and not your own. Keep a small notebook on your nightstand so you can write down one act of giving from the day, even a small one, and read it back as you pray.
This prayer also works well for a parent praying with a child, a spouse praying alongside a partner, or a small group ending a day of service together. Let each person name one thing they gave or wish they had given, and then pray the prayer aloud together, taking turns on the lines about trust and release. Hearing others confess their own struggles with generosity can make it easier to be honest with God about yours.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord, who gives generously and never tires of providing, fill you with peace tonight. May he open your heart to see the needs around you tomorrow and give you the grace to meet them with joy. May you rest well, knowing you are held, and may you wake to find that his mercy is new again.
