This night prayer for peace is written for the end of the day, when the house is quiet and your mind will not stop replaying what happened, what is coming, or what you are worried about. You can pray it at your bedside, in the car before you go inside, or while lying awake at two in the morning. Read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.
Night Prayer for Peace
Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Some of it went well, and some of it did not. I am tired in my body and tired in my thoughts. I bring you the conversation I wish had gone differently, the message I have not answered, the bills on the kitchen table, and the worry about the people I love who are struggling. I cannot carry all of it through the night, so I am setting it down here at your feet. Take what I cannot hold.
Quiet my mind tonight. When I start replaying the same worries again, remind me that you are awake and attentive while I sleep. Let my body loosen and my breathing slow. Guard the hours I cannot watch over, and keep watch over the ones I love, both near and far. If fear wakes me in the dark, let me come back to you instead of spiraling alone. Give me the kind of peace that does not depend on my circumstances being solved before I can rest. Thank you for the good things from today, even the small ones. I trust you with what is unfinished. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, I am worn out, and my mind will not settle. Hold me as I lie down. Take the worries I cannot fix tonight and keep them in your hands. Protect the people I love while I sleep. Let me wake to a new morning with a little more strength than I have now. Be my peace in the dark. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Psalm 4:8
In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.
(WEB)
Pray this verse slowly as you lie down, letting each phrase be a statement of trust. Notice how the psalmist describes sleep as something God makes possible, not something you must earn by getting everything done first.
Psalm 127:2
It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.
(WEB)
Read this one as permission to stop working on your worries. Ask God to help you release the striving that keeps you awake, and receive rest as a gift rather than a reward.
Isaiah 26:3
You will keep whoever’s mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you.
(WEB)
Use this verse when your thoughts keep moving from one concern to the next. Pray for a steady mind fixed on God, and ask him to bring your attention back to him each time it wanders.
Philippians 4:6-7
6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.
(WEB)
Turn the worries on your list into specific requests, and name each one to God before you sleep. Ask him to guard your heart and mind with the peace that goes beyond what you can make sense of.
Mark 4:39
He awoke, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” The wind ceased, and there was a great calm.
(WEB)
Remember the disciples in the boat, shaken by the storm while Jesus was close by. Pray that he would speak calm into the storms you are facing tonight, whatever shape they take.
How to Pray This Prayer
Choose a time just before you get into bed, when the lights are low and your phone is charging across the room. Sit on the edge of the bed or kneel beside it, and place one hand on your chest or on the blanket to help you slow down. Pray the longer version if you have time, or the shorter one if you are already drifting off. If a particular worry keeps surfacing, name it aloud and set it down deliberately before continuing.
You can also pray this prayer over someone else. Parents can speak it over children at bedtime, and spouses can pray it together before turning out the light. Changing the pronouns to “you” or “them” turns it into a blessing for another person, and it often makes the prayer easier to say when your own heart feels heavy.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who keeps watch over Israel keep watch over you tonight. May he steady your heart, settle your thoughts, and bring you safely to morning. May you wake rested, held, and ready for whatever the new day brings.
