BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This simple prayer for strength is for the moments when you are running on empty, whether the cause is a long season of caregiving, a hard diagnosis, a job that has drained you, or simply a week that asked for more than you had. Pray it in the morning before the day begins, in the car before walking into a difficult meeting, or late at night when you cannot sleep. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where they fit.

Simple Prayer for Strength

Lord, I come to you tired. My body is heavy, my mind keeps running through the list of things I have not finished, and some days I do not know where the next bit of energy will come from. You know the weight I am carrying, including the parts I have not found words for yet. Thank you that I do not have to pretend with you.

Give me the strength I need for this day, and only for this day. Steady my hands when I am anxious, quiet the voice that tells me I am failing, and help me take the next faithful step instead of trying to see the whole road at once. When I reach the end of myself, meet me there and remind me that your power is made perfect in weakness. Carry what I cannot carry, and let your peace guard my heart and mind. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am running low. Give me strength for the next hour, the next conversation, the next small task. Steady my breathing and my heart. I trust that you see me right now, and that you will not leave me to carry this alone. Help me rest in you for just this moment, and then give me the next one. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming the specific things that have worn you down, then asking God to renew your strength in the places they have taken it from. Notice that the promise is about waiting on the Lord, which means bringing your tiredness to him rather than fixing it alone first.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let it name God as your refuge. When your strength feels far away, ask him to be the place you run to, and thank him that you can come to him even before you feel ready.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Use this verse to admit where you feel weakest, then ask God to show you his grace in exactly that place. Paul wrote this from his own hardship, so it is a verse that has been tested in real suffering.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by tying it to one concrete task you face this week. Ask for strength for that task specifically, trusting that the Lord who supplies strength is with you in the ordinary work as well as the crisis.

Psalm 73:26

My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

(WEB)

Let this verse turn your attention from what is failing to who holds you. Ask God to be the strength of your heart when your body and emotions have nothing left to give.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying the full version at the start of your day, while your coffee is still hot and the house is quiet. If you can, sit in a chair you find comforting and place one hand on your chest as you read, which can help slow the rush of worry. Keeping a small note with the shorter version on your phone or in your wallet means you have something to pray when you are standing in a hallway or waiting in line.

If you are praying with someone else, such as a spouse, a friend, or a member of your small group, invite them to read the shorter version over you while you close your eyes. Hearing someone else speak your need aloud can make the weight feel less lonely, and it reminds you that you are not the only one holding it.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gives strength to the weary be close to you today. May he steady your steps, refresh your spirit, and give you enough for the hour in front of you. May you know that you are seen, held, and loved, and may peace settle over you like a quiet covering as you go.
