BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This prayer is for the quiet hour at the end of the day, when the lights go off and the mind keeps replaying conversations, unfinished tasks and worries about tomorrow. Pray it in bed, on the edge of the couch, or in the car before you walk into the house. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words where your day felt heavier or lighter than the lines below.

Prayer Before Bedtime

Lord, I come to you now as this day closes. Thank you for the moments that went well, for the coffee that warmed my hands, for the friend who texted at lunch, and for the work that got finished. Thank you for carrying me through the parts I could not manage on my own. Some things did not go the way I hoped, and I bring those to you too: the words I wish I had not said, the conversation I keep rehearsing, the bill I am still thinking about, the person I am worried for.

Take these things from my hands tonight. Quiet the replaying in my mind and the list that keeps growing in my head. Guard my sleep, and watch over my family, my home and everyone I love while I rest. If anyone I know is awake in pain, in fear or in a hospital bed, be near them and hold them until morning. Help me wake tomorrow ready to receive what is new and not already weighed down with what is past. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, the day is done and I am tired. Thank you for being with me in it. I give you what I did not finish, what I got wrong, and what I am afraid of for tomorrow. Settle my heart and let me sleep. Keep my people safe while I am resting. Thank you that I do not have to hold everything together tonight. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

Pray this verse as a simple statement of trust. Name the specific worry keeping you up, then say that you will lie down in peace because the Lord alone keeps you safe. Let the words slow your breathing as you go.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

This verse speaks to the restless habit of working late and worrying more. Pray it as an admission that rest is a gift from God, not a reward you must earn by finishing everything first.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and picture yourself bringing your weariness to Jesus. Pray it by naming the exact burdens you are carrying tonight, one at a time, and handing each to him.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to turn anxious thoughts into prayer. Pick the one worry that loops most often and bring it to God with thanks, trusting that his peace can guard your heart when your own thoughts will not settle.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this verse with gratitude for God’s faithfulness across the day that is ending. Thank him for mercies you noticed and for ones you missed, and ask him to show you fresh mercy when you wake.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try to pray before you pick up your phone for the night, since scrolling tends to fill the quiet space you need. Sit on the edge of the bed with your feet on the floor, or kneel beside it if that feels right. Keep something near you that helps you settle, like a glass of water or a folded blanket, so your hands have something to do while your heart slows down.

If you share a home, consider praying this prayer together with a spouse, a child, or a roommate, taking turns reading a line each. Parents can pray it over children at bedtime, and anyone living alone can ask a friend or a church member to pray it with them over the phone. Let the prayer be short if you are exhausted; God hears a sleepy word as clearly as a long one.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who watches over you in the night give you deep and restful sleep. May his peace settle over your home, your heart and every person you love. Let tomorrow come gently, with mercy enough for each new morning.
