A prayer before eating is a short, simple word of thanks to God for the food on the table and the hands that prepared it. Many Christians pray it at breakfast, lunch and supper, and some pray it at a snack or a shared meal with friends. You can read the prayer below aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in where they fit your day.

Prayer Before Eating

Father, thank You for this food in front of me. Thank You for the rain and sun that grew it, for the farmers and truckers and cooks who brought it here, and for the people who set this table. I confess that I often eat quickly and forget where my meals come from. Slow me down long enough to notice Your kindness in ordinary bread, warm soup and cool water.

Bless this meal and the hands that prepared it. Be with anyone at this table who is worried about money, health or the days ahead, and with anyone who has no food at all today. Help me to share what I can, to eat with gratitude rather than greed, and to remember that every good gift comes from You. Nourish my body so that I can serve You and love the people around me. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, thank You for this food and for the people who gave it to me. Bless what I am about to eat, and bless my body with strength for the work ahead. Keep me mindful that You provide my daily bread. Let this meal refresh me so that I can love and serve others well. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 145:15-16

15 The eyes of all wait for you. You give them their food in due season. 16 You open your hand, and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

(WEB)

This psalm reminds you that every living creature looks to God for food, and that He opens His hand to satisfy them. Pray these lines before a meal as a way of trusting that the food in front of you comes from a generous Provider.

Matthew 6:11

Give us today our daily bread.

(WEB)

Jesus taught His followers to ask for daily bread, which keeps the request small and close to home. Use this verse to ask God for today’s meal, not for a year’s supply, and to rest in the fact that He cares about what is on your plate.

Deuteronomy 8:10

You shall eat and be full, and you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which he has given you.

(WEB)

Moses told Israel to eat, be satisfied, and bless the Lord for the good land. Let this verse shape your prayer by turning your attention from the food itself to the God who gave it, and by making thankfulness the first word you speak at the table.

1 Timothy 4:4-5

4 For every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it is received with thanksgiving. 5 For it is sanctified through the word of God and prayer.

(WEB)

Paul writes that every created thing is good and is made holy by prayer and God’s word. Pray this passage over your meal to receive the food with a clear conscience and to set it apart for God’s use, asking Him to sanctify what you eat.

Acts 27:35

When he had said this, and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and he broke it, and began to eat.

(WEB)

In a storm at sea, Paul took bread, gave thanks to God in front of everyone, broke it, and began to eat. Pray this verse when you are facing a hard season, so that you can thank God openly at the table even when circumstances are uncertain.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer just before you pick up your fork, while your hands are still empty or resting on the table. Some families hold hands or join hands around the table, and small children often learn best by saying the prayer together, one line at a time. If you eat alone, you might pause, close your eyes, and speak the prayer quietly before taking the first bite.

You can also use this prayer at work or school. Before eating your lunch, take a breath, look at the food, and pray the shorter version silently. If you are sharing a meal with a guest who does not share your faith, you may simply say, “Let’s take a moment to give thanks,” and then pray in your own heart. Asking a friend or child to lead the prayer can be a gift to them as well.

A Blessing to Close

May the God who feeds the birds of the air and the children at your table make this meal a blessing to every person who shares it. May He strengthen each body, settle each worried mind, and turn each ordinary meal into a moment of gratitude. Go and eat with a thankful heart, knowing that you are cared for.
