This prayer is for the hours before you leave home, whether you are heading to the airport, loading the car for a long drive, or boarding a train to a city you have never seen. Pray it at the door, in the driveway, or in the quiet minutes before you buckle in. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer Before Traveling

Lord, you know where I am going and you know the road ahead of me, even the parts I cannot see yet. I ask you to go before me into every airport, highway, station and hotel room. Watch over the vehicle I am riding in and the hands on the wheel or the controls. Keep the drivers, pilots and strangers around me alert and kind, and keep me patient when lines are long and plans change.

I also bring you the people I am leaving behind. Be with the ones who will worry while I am gone, and give them peace that does not depend on hearing from me. Be with the people I will meet, whether I know them well or only pass them on the way. Help me to travel with a grateful heart and a willingness to notice what you are doing along the road, not only to reach the destination.

Thank you that I do not travel alone and that you are not limited by distance or time zones. Guard my body, my belongings and my mind, and bring me home again when my journey is finished. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am heading out now and I give this trip to you. Go before me, keep me and the people traveling with me safe, and steady my nerves if I feel anxious. Bring me to where I am going and back home again. Thank you for being with me on every mile. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 121:8

The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

This verse covers both leaving and returning, which makes it a good anchor for travel. Pray it as a request that God would watch over your going out and your coming in for the whole length of the trip.

Psalm 91:11

For he will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you in all your ways.

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and let it shape your prayer for protection. Ask God to send his care ahead of you, especially into situations you cannot control or predict.

Isaiah 43:2

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, and flame will not scorch you.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God being present in difficult passages of life, not only in easy ones. Pray it for the rough stretches of your journey, such as a delayed flight, a storm, or a frightening moment on the road.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage when your plans feel uncertain or the route is unfamiliar. Ask the Lord to direct your steps and to help you trust him with the decisions you cannot foresee.

Psalm 107:30

Then they are glad because it is calm, so he brings them to their desired haven.

(WEB)

This verse describes God bringing people safely to the harbor they were hoping to reach. Pray it with gratitude as you look ahead to arriving well, and thank him in advance for the safe landing.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer just before you leave, while your bags are still by the door and your keys are in your hand. Pausing for a few breaths and speaking the words aloud helps the transition from home to the road feel intentional rather than rushed. If you are traveling with others, you can invite them to join you, or let someone in the car pray the words while everyone bows their heads.

It can also help to hold something in your hands while you pray, such as your boarding pass, your car keys, or a small object you will carry with you. Let that item become a reminder that you are placing your trip into God’s care. If you are anxious, pray the shorter version again whenever fear rises, at the gate, in the passenger seat or on the platform.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you and beside you on every mile of this journey. May he guard your going out and your coming home, and may you arrive rested, safe, and aware of his nearness. Travel with peace, and return with thanks.
