This short prayer before surgery is meant for the hours before an operation, whether you are at home the night before, sitting in a pre-op bay, or waiting for your name to be called. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own fears and hopes into your own words. Pray it slowly, and let each line settle before moving on.

Short Prayer Before Surgery

Lord, I come to you before my surgery with a mix of hope and fear. I am thinking about the surgeons and nurses who will work on me, about the anesthesia, about the hours I will not remember, and about the people at home who are waiting for news. Be near to each of them. Steady their hands, sharpen their minds, and keep every decision in their care wise and careful.

I give you the things I cannot control. I cannot see what happens inside my body while I am asleep, and I cannot promise myself how I will feel when I wake. Hold my heart when the fear rises, and help me remember that you have known this day from the beginning. Calm my thoughts so that I can rest, and let my family find peace in your presence too. Thank you that I am not facing this alone. Into your hands I commit my body, my future, and my life. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am scared, and I need you right now. Be with the surgeon, the nurses, and the team in the room. Keep my body in your care, steady my breathing, and quiet the worry in my chest. I trust you with the outcome and with the next hours. Stay close to me, and bring me through this to the people who love me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the fear feels bigger than you. Name God as your refuge and strength, and ask him to be the steady place you can run to as you wait for your surgery to begin.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and let each promise be a request. Ask God to strengthen you, help you, and hold you upright while the medical team does what they have trained for.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Bring the specific burdens of this surgery to God, the cost, the recovery, the unknowns. Pray that he would carry what you cannot carry on your own, and that you would stop trying to hold it all.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to turn anxious thoughts into prayers. Thank God for his care before the surgery, and ask that his peace would guard your heart and mind through the operating room and beyond.

Psalm 139:9-10

9 If I take the wings of the dawn, and settle in the uttermost parts of the sea; 10 Even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand will hold me.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel far from home, alone in a hospital bed or waiting room. Ask God to remind you that his hand leads and holds you wherever you are, even in a place you did not choose.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray this the night before surgery, once you are in bed and the house is quiet, and again in the morning as you get ready to leave. If you can, sit with something steady in your hands, such as a smooth stone, a rosary, or simply your own folded fingers, and let the physical act anchor your attention. Pray it out loud if you can, since hearing your own voice can make the words feel more real.

You may also ask a friend, pastor, or family member to pray it with you or over you before you go in. Some people keep the shorter version written on a card in a pocket or wallet so they can pull it out in the waiting area. Whatever you choose, pray it as often as you need to, and do not worry about getting the words exactly right.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into the operating room and stand beside you on every step. May the hands that serve you be skilled and kind, and may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, guard your heart and mind as you wake and recover. Go in trusting that you are held.
