BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This prayer is for the stretch of time when you are waiting on a result, a answer, a diagnosis, a season to change, or a person to come home, and the waiting feels longer than you can bear. Pray it in the morning before the day begins, in the car before a phone call, or at night when the waiting is loudest. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Prayer During a Long Wait

Lord, you see the days I am counting and the hours I keep checking the phone. I am tired of waiting, and some mornings I wonder whether anything is moving at all. I confess that my mind runs ahead to every bad outcome, and my body is tense in ways I did not notice until I stopped to pray. Quiet my thoughts and steady my breathing. Remind me that you are not hurried and that you have not forgotten me.

Father, I bring you the specific things I am waiting for. You know the questions I cannot answer yet and the decisions that are still out of my hands. Give me enough strength for today, not for the whole season at once. When I am tempted to fill the empty space with worry, replace it with trust in your timing and your care. Keep me honest about what I can do and gentle with myself about what I cannot.

Thank you that I am never waiting alone. Whatever comes at the end of this season, I ask that you would meet me in it, and that I would come out of it knowing you more truly than I did when it began. Help me to wait with hope rather than dread, and to keep watch with open hands. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am waiting, and I am weary of it. Slow my heart and steady my mind right now. Hold the thing I cannot control, and remind me that you are with me in this moment and every moment after it. Give me the next small faithful step, and let that be enough for now. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 27:14

Wait for the LORD. Be strong, and let your heart take courage. Yes, wait for the LORD.

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly when the waiting feels endless. Ask God to make your heart brave and patient, and let the instruction to wait be an invitation to trust rather than a demand to endure alone.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Read this verse when you feel drained by the wait. Ask the Lord to renew your strength one day at a time, and name the specific tiredness you are carrying so that he can meet you in it.

Lamentations 3:25

The LORD is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.

(WEB)

Let this verse shape how you pray about the goodness you are hoping for. Ask God to help you keep looking for his kindness in ordinary moments while you wait for the thing you long for.

Romans 8:25

But if we hope for that which we don’t see, we wait for it with patience.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when hope feels thin. Ask God to help you hold on to what you have not yet seen, and to strengthen the quiet endurance that hope makes possible in you.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Bring your anxious thoughts to God in the form of specific requests and thanks. Pray that his peace would guard your heart and mind as you wait, even when the outcome is still unclear.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a fixed moment each day, such as first thing after you wake or just before you check your messages, and pray the main prayer there. If your mind wanders, keep your hands busy with something simple like folding laundry, holding a cup of tea, or writing the date on a notebook page. Some people find it helpful to write down one thing they are waiting for and place the paper somewhere they will see it.

Invite someone you trust to pray this prayer with you, or to pray it for you when you are too worn out to speak. A friend, a spouse, or a small group can carry the waiting with you and remind you of God’s faithfulness when your own memory feels thin. Ask them to check in on you during the hardest days.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who has not forgotten you keep you steady through every long day of waiting. May he give you rest where you are weary, courage where you are afraid, and a patient hope that does not depend on how quickly the answer comes. May you know, in the quiet hours, that you are held.
