A simple prayer before bedtime gives you words to hand the day over to God before you sleep. It is meant for the quiet minutes after the lights go down, when the to-do list is still running and the mind is not ready to stop. You can read the prayer below aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own sentences in the same spirit.

Simple Prayer Before Bedtime

Lord, the day is ending, and I bring it to you as it is. Thank you for the moments that were good: the coffee that tasted right, the conversation that made me laugh, the small kindness someone showed me when I did not expect it. Thank you for carrying me through the hours I did not handle well. Forgive me for the words I said too quickly, for the worry I held on to instead of giving to you, and for the times I tried to manage everything on my own.

Now I set down what is still heavy. Be with the people I love, especially those who are sick, grieving, or far away. Be with the work and the bills and the decisions waiting for me in the morning, and help me trust that tomorrow is already in your hands. Let me sleep without rehearsing every problem again. Guard my home and my family through the night, and give my body the rest it needs. Settle my heart the way a parent settles a child, and let me wake up knowing you were close the whole time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired, and I give you this day. Take what I could not finish and what I got wrong, and forgive me where I need forgiveness. Be near the people I love tonight. Keep me safe while I sleep, and let me wake up to your mercy again. Thank you for being awake when I am not. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, the LORD alone, make me live in safety.

(WEB)

This verse is a good line to end on. Pray it slowly, letting the idea of lying down in peace sink in, and thank God that your sleep does not depend on how well the day went.

Psalm 127:2

It is vain for you to rise up early, to stay up late, eating the bread of toil; for he gives sleep to his loved ones.

(WEB)

When you feel guilty for stopping, pray this verse as a reminder that rest is a gift God gives to those he loves. Ask him to help you receive it without earning it.

Psalm 3:5

I laid myself down and slept. I awakened; for the LORD sustains me.

(WEB)

Use this verse when fear keeps you awake. Name the specific worry you carry, then pray that God would sustain you through the night, which the psalmist says he did.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks directly to the weary. Read this as an invitation, and pray it back to him by naming the weight you are setting down before you sleep.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as you look toward morning. Thank God that his faithfulness is new each day, and ask him to meet you again when you wake.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer in the last few minutes before you turn out the light, ideally in the same place each night, such as your bed or a chair beside it. Some people find it helps to sit with an open hand on their lap, then turn the palm up to show they are releasing the day. If your mind wanders, return to one line at a time instead of trying to pray the whole thing at once.

The prayer also works well shared. Parents can pray it over children at bedtime, and spouses can take turns reading it aloud to one another. If you live alone, you might keep a short written copy on your nightstand so you have words ready on the nights when your own are hard to find.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord keep you through the night and lift the weight from your shoulders. May his peace guard your heart and your mind, and may you rest in the certainty that you are held. Sleep well, and wake to his mercy.
