This prayer is for the moment when you know you have done wrong, or when the weight of something you did or failed to do will not lift. You can pray it when you are alone in the morning, at the end of a hard day, or in the quiet minutes after you have said something you wish you could take back. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak your own words in the spaces it leaves open.

Prayer for Forgiveness

Lord, I come to you without excuses. You see what I did, and you also see the thoughts behind it that I have been hiding even from myself. I am sorry. I have hurt people I love, and I have turned away from you when it would have been easier to stay close. Thank you that you already know everything I am afraid to say out loud, and that knowing it has not made you pull away from me.

Please wash me clean. Take the shame that keeps me replaying this over and over at night, and take the fear that I have gone too far to be welcomed back. Help me to make right what I can, to apologize without hiding behind my reasons, and to accept the consequences with a humble heart. Give me the courage to face the people I have wronged, and let me not confuse guilt with the kind of repentance that actually changes a life.

Thank you for your mercy, which is not earned but freely given. Let me receive it today, not as something I deserve, but as the gift you have always wanted to give me. Teach me to forgive others as I have been forgiven, and make my heart soft where it has grown hard. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am sorry. I know I have done wrong, and I do not want to hide it from you. Thank you that your mercy is larger than my failure. Cleanse my heart, help me to make things right, and let me rest in the forgiveness you have already offered. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 51:1

Have mercy on me, God, according to your loving kindness. According to the multitude of your tender mercies, blot out my transgressions.

(WEB)

David begins his prayer of confession by appealing to God’s steadfast love, not to his own record. When you pray this verse, you are asking God to act according to his nature rather than according to what you deserve.

1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(WEB)

John links confession with faithfulness and justice, which shows that God’s forgiveness is reliable. Pray this verse by naming specifically what you are confessing, then trusting that God has heard you.

Psalm 103:12

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

(WEB)

The psalmist uses the image of distance to describe how completely God removes our sin. Use this verse when guilt keeps returning, and ask God to help you believe that what he has put far away stays far away.

Isaiah 1:18

“Come now, and let us reason together,” says the LORD: “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow. Though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

(WEB)

God invites his people to reason with him, and promises that even deep stains can be made clean. Pray this verse slowly, asking God to show you where your heart needs washing and to take away the stain you have been carrying.

Luke 15:20

“He arose, and came to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him.

(WEB)

The father in Jesus’ parable runs to meet his returning son before the speech of apology is finished. Pray this verse by picturing God’s welcome, and let it answer the fear that he is waiting with arms folded.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helps to pray this prayer early in the morning or late in the evening, when the day’s noise is quiet and you can think clearly. Sit somewhere you can be still, and keep a pen nearby if you want to write down the specific wrong you are confessing. Writing it down makes it concrete, so you are not just carrying a vague sense of unease.

You might also hold something in your hands while you pray, such as a cup of tea, a stone, or the edge of a table, to keep your attention from drifting. If the wrong involved another person, consider praying the prayer with a trusted friend or pastor who can help you take the next step toward reconciliation. Forgiveness from God is complete, but how you live out repentance often takes time and the support of others.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees everything also see you with mercy, and may his forgiveness settle over your heart like a clean morning. May you be freed from the shame that keeps you looking back, and may you walk forward with a lighter step. The Lord is patient, kind, and ready to restore what was broken.
