BIBLEREADER // ELIAS NELSON

These prayers are for anyone who wants to bring their relationship with a partner, spouse, or someone they are dating before God. They can be prayed at the start or end of the day, before a hard conversation, or after an argument has cooled. You can read the prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words about the people you love.

Prayers for My Relationship

Lord, you know the person I love and the history we carry together. You know the good moments we treasure and the places where we keep stumbling. I come to you tonight asking for a heart that is patient with them and honest with myself. Where I have been quick to speak and slow to listen, soften me. Where I have been holding onto old hurts, help me set them down in your hands and not carry them into tomorrow.

Father, we need your wisdom in the decisions we make about our future, our finances, our families and our time. Give us the kind of love that does not demand its own way, that stays kind when we are tired, and that forgives quickly. Guard our trust, protect our honesty, and keep us from letting work, worry or distraction crowd out the time we set aside for each other. Make our home a place of safety and not of tension.

Thank you for the gift of this relationship. Bless the two of us, and let our love reflect your faithfulness to us. Teach us to pray together as well as apart, and let us grow closer to you as we grow closer to each other. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am asking you for help with the person I love. Give me patience when I feel frustrated, kindness when I want to be right, and the courage to speak honestly without wounding. Protect what we share and draw us both nearer to you. Let our relationship be a place where you are glad to dwell. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4

Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud…

(WEB)

Pray this verse slowly and ask God to shape your own love into the patient, gentle kind described here. Name a specific moment this week when you need patience, and let the words guide your next response.

Ephesians 4:2

With all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love…

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for humility and gentleness when disagreements come up. Pray it before a difficult conversation, asking God to slow your tongue and steady your heart.

Colossians 3:13

Bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Bring this verse to God when resentment is building. Ask him to help you forgive as you have been forgiven, and to loosen the grip of any hurt you have been holding.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

9 Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. 10 For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow; but woe to him who is alone when he falls, and doesn’t have another to lift him up.

(WEB)

Read this passage as a prayer of thanks for the partnership you share. Ask God to help you lift each other up and to be present when one of you stumbles.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Pray these verses when you are unsure about a decision that affects your relationship. Ask God to direct your steps and to give you trust when you cannot see the path ahead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many couples find it helpful to pray at the same time each day, such as over morning coffee or before going to sleep. Sit somewhere quiet where you will not be interrupted, and keep a pen nearby to write down any specific request that comes to mind. If you are praying alone for a relationship that is strained, you might hold a small object in your hand, like a ring or a stone, as a reminder to bring that person before God again.

You can also invite a trusted friend, pastor or small group to pray with you. Ask them to hold your relationship in their prayers and check in with you over the weeks ahead. Sharing the burden with others can help you stay hopeful and gently accountable.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this relationship and keep it steady through every season. May he give each of you the grace to love well, the humility to say sorry, and the joy of walking together toward him. May his peace settle over your home and his faithfulness hold you both.
