Prayer for My Decisions: Words to Pray When the Choice Is Hard

By
Sophie Gardner

This prayer is for the moments when you have to choose and cannot see the whole road ahead. It is meant for the decision you are facing today, whether it concerns a job, a move, a relationship, money, or a choice that will shape the next season of your life. You can pray it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put the names and details of your own situation into your own words.

Prayer for My Decisions

Lord, you know what is weighing on me right now. I have options in front of me, and each one has something good and something frightening about it. I do not want to choose out of fear, or out of pressure from others, or because I am tired of waiting. Please slow my thinking down enough that I can hear you above the noise of my own worry. Show me what is true, what is wise, and what is simply loud.

I confess that I want certainty before I move. I want to know how this will turn out, and I want to be sure I will not regret it. But you have not promised me a map of every outcome. You have promised to be with me. So I ask for the courage to take the next faithful step, even when the rest of the path is hidden. Guard my heart from the need to control everything, and remind me that you are already working in the details I cannot see.

Help me to weigh this honestly. Bring to mind the people who will be affected, the commitments I have already made, and the values I most want to keep. Where I have been careless, make me aware of it. Where I have been afraid, give me a steadier heart. Whatever I decide, let it reflect your character: honesty, kindness, patience, and a willingness to do what is right even when it costs me something. Lead me, and let me trust that you will correct me if I drift. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I need your wisdom right now, and I do not have time to think it through alone. Quiet my fear and steady my mind. Show me the next faithful step, and give me the peace to take it. Help me trust that you are with me in this choice, whatever it turns out to be. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

James 1:5

But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him.

(WEB)

When you feel foolish for not knowing what to do, pray this verse as a simple request. Ask God to give you wisdom, and name the specific decision you are facing so that your prayer stays honest and focused.

Proverbs 3:5-6

5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

(WEB)

Use this passage to surrender the part of the decision that you most want to control. Thank God that he is able to make your paths straight, even when you cannot yet see where they lead.

Psalm 32:8

I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are unsure which way to turn. Ask the Lord to guide you with his eye, so that you stay close enough to hear his direction and do not rely only on your own reasoning.

Isaiah 30:21

And when you turn to the right hand, and when you turn to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way. Walk in it.”

(WEB)

Read this verse slowly and ask God to help you recognize his voice among your other thoughts. Pray that you would be attentive enough to follow when he points you forward, and quiet enough to notice when he does.

Colossians 3:15

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when you are torn between two good options. Ask God to let his peace settle your heart, so that the choice you make rests on calm trust rather than anxious striving.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time, such as early morning before the day fills up or the evening after the house is still. Sit somewhere you will not be interrupted, and keep a pen and paper nearby. As you pray, write down the options you are weighing and any thoughts that come up. Writing slows the mind and often shows you what you were avoiding looking at.

Consider asking a trusted friend, a mentor, or a small group to pray this with you or for you. Tell them the decision in plain words and ask them to pray for wisdom and peace rather than for a particular outcome. Sharing the weight with others can keep you from carrying it alone and help you hear advice you might otherwise dismiss.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord give you clear sight and a steady heart as you choose. May he go before you in every step and gather up what you cannot manage yet. May you walk forward in peace, knowing that you are held, guided, and loved whatever the outcome.
