BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This prayer is for anyone heading into paid work, whether that means a job outside the home, a shift that starts before dawn, or a long day at a desk. It is meant for the moments before you walk out the door, during a break, or at the close of the day when you need to hand the hours back to God. You can read it aloud exactly as written or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayer for Those Working Today

Lord, I come to you before my work begins. You know the tasks waiting for me, the emails I have not opened, the people I will meet and the pressure that may rise by midmorning. Thank you for giving me this day and for the strength that comes with it. I do not have to carry it by myself.

Give me clear thinking and steady hands. Help me do my work with honesty, care and diligence, even when no one notices. Where I am tempted to cut corners, gossip or tell myself that my effort does not matter, remind me that I am working for you. Guard my tongue when I am tired and frustrated, and give me patience with the coworkers, customers and bosses who make the day harder.

Bless the people who depend on my work and the people who depend on me at home. Provide for our needs and keep my mind from anxiety about money, deadlines and the future. When I finish, let me come home with a thankful heart rather than an empty one. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am going into my work today and I need you there with me. Give me focus, honesty and a kind word for everyone I meet. Keep me from anger and fear, and let my effort honor you even when it goes unseen. Help me finish well and come home at peace. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Colossians 3:23

And whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men…

(WEB)

Pray this verse by asking God to change how you see your tasks. Ask him to let the ordinary work of your hands become an offering, so that even routine jobs feel like service to the Lord.

Proverbs 16:3

Commit your deeds to the LORD, and your plans shall succeed.

(WEB)

Read this verse as you plan your day and hand over your schedule to God. Ask him to shape your plans and steady your steps so that what you attempt is truly his purpose for you.

Psalm 90:17

Let the favor of the Lord our God be on us; establish the work of our hands for us; yes, establish the work of our hands.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for God’s favor on the work of your hands. Pray that the effort you give today would be established and fruitful in ways that outlast the day itself.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Turn to this verse when your workload feels heavy. Bring your exhaustion to Jesus honestly and ask him to give you rest in his presence, even in the middle of a busy shift.

Philippians 4:6

In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.

(WEB)

Pray this verse whenever worry about your job or finances starts to build. Name each concern to God in prayer and thank him for what he has already provided before you ask for more.

How to Pray This Prayer

Pray this prayer while you are still at home, sitting at the kitchen table with a cup of coffee, or in the car before you go inside. If your work has you on your feet or moving between tasks, you can pray the shorter version silently while your hands are busy. Keeping a small note with the prayer on your phone or in your bag makes it easy to return to during a lunch break or a difficult meeting.

If you pray with a spouse, a roommate or a friend, consider reading the prayer together and taking turns with the sections about coworkers and finances. Those who work alongside you can also pray for you, and you can ask a trusted believer to lift up your job by name this week. Ending the day by returning to the same prayer, this time with thanks for what was done and surrender for what was not, helps close the workday well.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord go before you into this day and walk with you through every task and conversation. May his peace settle over your work, his wisdom guide your decisions, and his faithfulness meet you when you return home tonight.
