This page offers prayers for a loved one: a family member, friend, or someone you care about who is facing illness, fear, a hard season, or an uncertain future. You can pray these words in the morning before the day begins, during a long drive, at a bedside, or late at night when sleep will not come. Read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words wherever your heart leads.

Prayers for a Loved One

Lord, you know the name of the person I am lifting to you right now, and you know every detail of what they are carrying. You know the sleepless nights, the phone calls that bring bad news, the questions they cannot yet answer about tomorrow. I ask that you would surround them with your presence, so that they never feel alone in the hardest hours. Be near them in their body, their mind, and their heart.

Give them peace that does not depend on circumstances changing first. Steady their thoughts when worry rises, and quiet the voices that tell them they are failing. Where they are weary, give them strength for the next small step, and where they are grieving, give them comfort that holds them up. Provide for their daily needs, and send people into their life who will show kindness and practical help.

Above all, draw them close to you. Help them to sense your love even when they cannot feel anything at all, and let them know that you are faithful when everything else feels uncertain. I trust you with them and with the outcome I cannot see. Keep them in your care today and every day to come. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I bring this person to you now. You see where they hurt and where they are afraid. Be with them in this moment, give them the strength they need, and remind them that they are held by your hand. Wrap them in your peace and let them rest in your love. Thank you that you hear me and that you care for them more than I ever could. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 46:1-3

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; 3 though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling. Selah.

(WEB)

Pray this psalm by naming the fear your loved one faces and declaring God as their refuge in that exact place. Let the picture of steady ground underfoot become the image you hold before the Lord on their behalf.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

Speak this promise over your loved one slowly, one phrase at a time. Ask God to make these words feel personal to them, so that they hear his voice saying he is with them and will not leave them.

Philippians 4:6-7

6 In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Use this passage to pray for release from anxiety. Ask that your loved one would bring each worry to God in prayer, and that the peace the apostle describes would guard their heart and mind.

Romans 8:38-39

38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as a declaration that nothing in your loved one’s life can separate them from God’s love. Name the specific things that frighten them and place each one under the reach of that promise.

Psalm 121:7-8

7 The LORD will keep you from all evil. He will keep your soul. 8 The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in, from this time forward, and forever more.

(WEB)

Ask the Lord to keep your loved one from harm as they come and go, in their daily routines and in unfamiliar places. Pray it over their departures and arrivals, asking God to guard every step.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time to pray for your loved one, such as the first cup of coffee in the morning or the quiet minutes before bed. Keep a card or note with their name in your Bible, your wallet, or on your phone, so that you can pause and pray whenever you think of them during the day. If you can, sit in a place where you feel settled, and hold your hands open in your lap as a sign that you are releasing them to God.

Invite others to pray with you, whether a spouse, a close friend, or a small group at church. Let them know the specific needs so they can join you in asking God for the same things. If your loved one is willing, pray with them directly, either in person or on the phone, and let them hear your words of trust.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your loved one and keep them safe in every season. May his face shine upon them and be gracious to them, and may he give them a deep and lasting peace. And may they be held, today and always, in the steady love of the one who never lets go.
