This page gives you a written prayer for a pastor, along with a shorter version for quick moments and a few scriptures to pray alongside it. Pray it on a Sunday morning before worship, during the week when your pastor is carrying a hard decision, or whenever a name comes to mind and you want to ask God to strengthen that person. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for a Pastor

Father, thank you for the pastor you have placed over this church and over the people who gather here. You know the weight they carry: the sermons they study late into the night, the hospital calls they answer at odd hours, the families in crisis, the quiet disappointments that never make it into the bulletin. Lord, please give them rest that goes deeper than sleep. Refresh their body, settle their mind, and remind them that the work is yours before it is theirs.

Guard their heart from pride when people praise them and from despair when people criticize them. Give them wisdom for the decisions no one else wants to make, and courage to speak the truth in love even when it costs them friendships. Protect their marriage and their children from the way ministry can crowd out ordinary life. Let their family know they are loved for who they are, not only for the role they fill. Keep them close to you in their own prayer and in their own reading of your word, so that they never preach from an empty well. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, you know the name I am holding before you right now, and you know the weight that pastor carries today. Strengthen them for what lies ahead, give them clear wisdom and a steady heart, and let them feel your nearness in a way that steadies them. Protect their family and their rest. Let them see the fruit of faithful work in ways that encourage them. Thank you for their life and their calling. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Ephesians 6:18

With all prayer and requests, praying at all times in the Spirit, and being watchful to this end in all perseverance and requests for all the saints…

(WEB)

Paul asks the church to pray at all times for all the saints, and that includes the leaders among them. Let this verse shape your prayer by naming your pastor and asking God to keep them supported by people who never stop praying.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they watch on behalf of your souls, as those who will give account, that they may do this with joy, and not with groaning, for that would be unprofitable for you.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of leaders who keep watch over souls and will give an account. Pray that your pastor will carry that weight with joy rather than dread, and that you will be a congregation that makes their work a delight.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13

12 But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you, 13 and to respect and honor them in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

(WEB)

Paul asks the church to respect those who labor among them and esteem them highly in love. Pray that you would honor your pastor in word and deed, and that your pastor would feel the appreciation of the people they serve.

Philippians 1:3-6

3 I thank my God whenever I remember you, 4 always in every request of mine on behalf of you all, making my requests with joy, 5 for your partnership in furtherance of the Good News from the first day until now; 6 being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul thanks God for his partners in the gospel and trusts God to finish the good work he began. Use this passage to thank God for your pastor’s faithfulness and to trust that God is still at work in their life and ministry.

Psalm 127:1

Unless the LORD builds the house, they labor in vain who build it. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman guards it in vain.

(WEB)

Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Pray this over your pastor’s ministry, asking God to be the builder and to free your leader from the belief that everything depends on them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray for their pastor early in the week, before the Sunday rush begins, or on the morning of a service while they sit with their coffee. Keep a note on your phone or a card in your Bible with your pastor’s name, so that when you pass them in the hallway you can remember to pray for them later that day. You might also write a brief note of encouragement and slip it into an envelope, then pray the prayer over the card as you seal it.

If you are part of a small group, a prayer team, or a family, invite others to pray the same words on the same day. A shared prayer carries a different kind of strength, and your pastor will often hear that others are standing with them. You can also ask your pastor directly what they would like prayer for this week, which tells you more about their real needs than any guess could.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless your pastor and keep them. May he make his face shine upon them and be gracious to them. May he lift up his countenance on them and give them peace, and may the people they serve be a source of joy and rest in their life. Go in that peace yourself as well, knowing that the same faithful God is watching over both of you.
