These prayers for caregivers are written for the person who spends their days looking after a parent, spouse, child or friend who cannot fully care for themselves. Pray them in the early morning before the house wakes, in the car between appointments, or late at night when the day is finally quiet. You can read them aloud exactly as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words to God in the same spirit.

Prayers for Caregivers

Lord, you see the person I am caring for, and you see me. You know the medications I have counted out, the bathing and feeding and lifting, the nights of broken sleep and the mornings that begin before the sun. You know how tired my body is and how tired my heart has become. I do not ask you to make the work disappear today. I ask you to meet me in it and to give me enough strength for the next hour.

Father, I confess the impatience that sometimes rises in me when I am worn thin. I confess the resentment I am afraid to say out loud, and the guilt I feel for even having it. Forgive me, and cover me with your patience toward myself. Remind me that you do not measure my love by how cheerfully I perform each task. Let my small, faithful acts be enough in your sight.

Be near to the one I care for. Ease their pain, calm their fear, and let them feel your presence even when I cannot be in the room. Give me wisdom for the decisions I must make, rest for the moments I can steal, and people who will step in to share the weight. When I am alone with the hardest things, let me know that you are not far away. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am stretched thin right now. Steady my hands and quiet my mind for the next task. Give me the strength I need for this one moment, and trust me to bring the rest to you later. Help me to love the person in front of me well, even when I feel I have nothing left to give. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your energy has run out completely. Ask God to give strength to you in the same way he gives it to the weary. Let the promise remind you that your limits are not the end of what he can do.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Bring this invitation to God at the end of a long shift of care. Name the particular burdens you are carrying, one by one, and ask Jesus to receive each of them. Then sit for a moment in the rest he offers.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

Read this verse when you feel you are failing at caregiving. Admit to God where you feel weakest, and thank him that his grace is sufficient for exactly those places. Let his strength be the thing you lean on.

Galatians 6:9

Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

(WEB)

Use this verse when the work feels endless and unnoticed. Ask God to keep you from growing weary in doing good, and to show you the small harvest that is already growing in the midst of hard days.

Psalm 55:22

Cast your burden on the LORD, and he will sustain you. He will never allow the righteous to be moved.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when the weight becomes too heavy to carry alone. Hand over each worry to God as a specific burden, and trust him to sustain you as you do the next thing in front of you.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular time and place for prayer, even if it is only five minutes in the kitchen while the kettle heats or in the parked car before you walk back inside. Keep a pen nearby and jot down anything that rises up during prayer, such as a call to make or a need you forgot. Having a simple, repeated rhythm helps you return to God when your days feel scattered.

Consider inviting a friend, a pastor or a family member to pray this prayer with you or for you. Some caregivers find it helpful to pray it aloud with someone who understands the work, while others prefer to read it silently and then tell a trusted person one thing they need. Either way, let someone else carry some of the prayer as well.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees every hidden hour of your care give you strength for each day and rest for each night. May he surround the one you love with his peace, and may he surround you with the same. May you know, even in your weariness, that you are seen, held and deeply loved by God.
