This page offers a written prayer for a prayer group, along with a shorter version for a quiet moment and a few Scriptures to pray alongside it. Use the main prayer when your group gathers, whether in a living room, a church classroom, or over a phone call. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or treat it as a starting point and add the names and needs of the people in your circle.
Prayers for a Prayer Group
Lord, we come together today because you have promised to meet with those who gather in your name. Thank you for the people sitting around this table, for the willingness it took to show up, and for the honesty some of us brought with us. Some of us are carrying heavy news from work, a diagnosis we have not yet told our children about, or a marriage that feels thin and worn. Others are carrying a quiet loneliness that no one at church would guess. Hear each of these things, Father, even the ones we have not found the words to say.
Give us the courage to speak plainly here and the wisdom to listen without rushing to fix. Keep our conversations kind and our confidences safe. Where we are tempted to gossip or to compare our struggles, turn our hearts back toward you and toward one another. Teach us to pray for each other specifically, by name, and to follow up when the week is over. Let this group be a place where people are noticed and remembered.
We ask all of this in the name of Jesus, who prayed for his friends and still prays for us. Make us a people who bring each other before your throne and trust you with the outcome. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Father, we are gathered here and we need you. Be present in this room, in every heart and every worry we have named. Guard what we share, soften what is hard, and let each person here feel known by you and by one another. Help us listen well and speak truthfully. Strengthen the ones who are weary and quiet our anxious hearts. Amen.
Scriptures to Pray Alongside
Matthew 18:20
For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.”
(WEB)
Read this slowly before the group begins, and let it remind everyone that Jesus is present among the gathered people, not only in the words spoken but in the room itself. Pray that the group would hold onto this presence when conversations get difficult.
James 5:16
Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.
(WEB)
Use this verse to ask for openness about real struggles. Pray that members would feel free to confess their needs, and that the group would respond with prayer rather than judgment or advice.
Philippians 4:6
In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
(WEB)
Pray this verse over the anxieties people bring to the group. Ask that each person would hand their worries to God in prayer and leave the meeting lighter, trusting that their requests are heard.
Galatians 6:2
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.
(WEB)
This verse calls believers to carry one another’s burdens. Ask God to show each member a practical way to help someone in the group this week, whether through a meal, a call, or a note of encouragement.
Ecclesiastes 4:12
If a man prevails against one who is alone, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
(WEB)
Pray this passage for the strength that comes from standing together. Ask that the group would be a cord that holds firm, especially for members facing seasons when faith feels fragile.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many groups find it helpful to begin the meeting with the main prayer read aloud by one person, then pause for silence before anyone speaks. A good time is at the start of the evening, after everyone has gotten settled with coffee or tea, so that people can arrive fully and not distracted. Keep a small notebook nearby and write down each request as it is shared, so you can pray for it again during the week.
If your group is large or the meeting is short, ask one or two members to lead the prayer while others hold hands or simply sit quietly with open palms. Those who cannot be present can be invited to pray the shorter version at home at the same hour. Consider assigning each person a prayer partner outside the group for the coming month, someone they can text, call, or meet for coffee.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord bless each person gathered here and keep them safe in every season. May he make his face shine upon this group and give each member peace that outlasts the evening. May they leave knowing they are loved, carried, and never forgotten.
