This page offers prayers for a single parent, written for the hours when you are carrying the whole weight of a household alone: the early mornings, the late bills, the empty chair at the table, the quiet worry at bedtime. Pray the prayer below when you have a few minutes to sit or kneel, or read it aloud as written. You are also free to use it as a starting point and speak your own words into the spaces it leaves open.

Prayers for a Single Parent

Lord, you see me getting the children up in the dark, packing lunches while I answer the phone, and lying awake doing the math on the rent. You know there is no one to split the night shift with and no second adult to catch what I miss. I bring you my exhaustion honestly. I do not need to pretend I am managing better than I am.

Be my strength where mine has run out. Give me patience for the child who is struggling and wisdom for the decisions that land on me alone. Let my children feel safe in their home, and let them see a parent who keeps trying, even on the hard days. When I feel guilty about what I cannot give them, remind me that you have placed them in my care and that you go before me into every day.

Provide what we need, whether that is money, a reliable ride, a friend who shows up, or a kind neighbor at the right moment. Surround us with people who will love my children well. Guard our hearts from loneliness, and help me rest when rest is possible. I trust you with the future we cannot yet see. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am tired and I am doing this alone in many ways. Hold my children and hold me. Give me enough strength for the next hour and enough grace for the mistakes I will make today. Provide for what we need, and keep us close to you. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 68:5

A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

(WEB)

This verse calls God a father to the fatherless and a defender of widows. When you are the only parent present, pray it as a reminder that your children and you are not without a protector.

Deuteronomy 31:6

Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid or scared of them; for the LORD your God himself is who goes with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you.”

(WEB)

Read this slowly when fear about the future rises. Pray it by naming the specific frightening thing, then asking God to be the one who goes with you into it.

Matthew 11:28

“Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest.

(WEB)

Jesus speaks to people who are worn out and heavy laden. Pray it as an honest invitation, bringing the weariness of constant responsibility and asking for rest you can actually receive.

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

This verse says God gives strength to the weary and increases power to those without it. Pray it when you feel you have nothing left, asking him to supply what you cannot produce.

Philippians 4:19

My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.

(WEB)

Paul writes that God will supply every need according to his riches. Pray it over your household’s practical needs, listing them one by one and trusting him to meet them in his way and time.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a time when the house is quietest. Many single parents find that early morning, before the children wake, or the few minutes after everyone is asleep, is the only window available. Sit in the same chair each day if you can, or kneel by the bed. Keep a pen nearby so you can write down any specific worry that surfaces while you pray, and bring that list back to God the next day.

Pray with your hands busy if that helps you focus. Fold laundry, wash dishes or drive while you say the words quietly. If you have a trusted friend, a pastor or a relative who knows your situation, ask them to pray this prayer with you or for you. Having another person agree with you in prayer can ease the sense that you are carrying everything in isolation.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who sees you each morning and each night give you strength for what is ahead. May he keep your children close, provide what you need, and fill your home with peace. You are not forgotten, and you are not walking this road alone.
