These prayers are written for bereaved parents, people who have lost a child at any age and at any stage of life. You can pray them in the early days of grief, on an anniversary, in the middle of a sleepless night, or whenever the ache of loss feels too heavy to carry in silence. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak your own words where your heart needs to go further.
Prayers for Bereaved Parents
Lord, you know the name of the child I lost, and you know the exact shape of the empty space they left behind. I come to you with a grief I cannot explain to most people. Some mornings I forget for a moment and reach for them, and then the loss breaks over me again. Be near to me in those moments. Hold the part of me that feels like it has stopped working.
I bring you the questions I cannot answer: why this happened, what I could have done differently, how I am supposed to keep living now. I bring you the anger I am afraid to say out loud and the guilt that whispers at night. Teach me that you can hear all of it and that you are not repelled by my honesty. Give me rest when my mind will not stop replaying the last days. Give me people who can sit with me without trying to fix what cannot be fixed.
Father, I trust that the child I love is held in your care in a way I can no longer provide. Comfort me with that truth on the days I need it most, and keep my hope alive, even when it is small and tired. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, my child is gone and my heart is broken. I cannot find the words for everything I feel, so I simply bring you the pain as it is. Hold me now. Steady my breathing and keep me from sinking under the weight of this loss. Remind me that you are near, and that my child is safe in your hands. Amen.

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

Romans 8:38-39
38 For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from God’s love, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(WEB)
Pray these verses when you fear that your loss has placed you beyond God’s reach. Ask him to fill your mind with the assurance that nothing, including death, can separate you from his love.
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away.”
(WEB)
Hold this promise before God as a hope for the future. Ask him to strengthen your faith that one day every tear will be wiped away, and that your child’s story is not finished.
How to Pray This Prayer
Many bereaved parents find that the early morning or the quiet hour before bed is the easiest time to pray, when the house is still and there is nothing to distract from the loss. Choose a chair or a spot near a photograph or a keepsake of your child, and let your eyes rest there as you speak. If you cannot get through the whole prayer, stop after a sentence and simply breathe. God does not require a complete prayer to hear you.
You might also keep something in your hands while you pray, such as a ring, a folded blanket, or the cool surface of a cup. Physical touch can anchor you when your thoughts scatter. If you are not able to pray alone, invite a trusted friend, a pastor, or a support group to pray these words with you or over you, so that you do not carry the grief by yourself.
A Blessing to Close
May the God of all comfort surround this grieving parent with a peace that makes no sense to the world and yet holds steady through every wave. May they be carried through the hard days and find unexpected moments of gentleness along the way. May the memory of their child be held with love, and may hope slowly take root again in the quiet places of their heart.
