This page offers prayers for humility, a request many Christians bring when they notice pride in their hearts, their speech, or their relationships. Pray the longer prayer at a quiet point in your day, or the shorter one when you feel the pull to defend yourself or look impressive. You can read either prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words in place of mine.
Prayers for Humility
Father, you see me more clearly than I see myself. I confess that I like being right, being respected, and being the one people turn to. Some days I want credit for the work nobody noticed, and I feel a sting when someone else gets the praise. Forgive me for the small ways I put myself first in conversations, in my family, at work, and even in my prayers. Show me where pride has taken root without my noticing it.
Teach me to think of myself less and of others more. Help me listen before I speak, admit my mistakes without making excuses, and receive correction without getting defensive. When someone else succeeds, let me rejoice with them instead of comparing myself. Give me the courage to serve quietly, with no one watching and no reward expected. Remind me that every good thing I have came from you, and that I have nothing to boast about apart from you. Shape my heart to be gentle and open, and make me more like Jesus, who humbled himself for my sake. Amen.
A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment
Lord, I feel the urge to prove myself right now. Quiet that voice in me that wants to be seen and admired. Help me to put others first in this moment, to speak with kindness, and to take the lower place without resentment. Let my words and actions reflect the humility of Jesus, and let me find my worth in you alone. Amen.

How to Pray This Prayer
Many people find it helpful to pray the longer prayer first thing in the morning, before the day’s demands begin to crowd in. Sit somewhere quiet with a cup of coffee or tea, and read the prayer slowly, pausing after each sentence to let it sink in. You might also choose one line from it to carry with you through the day.
The shorter prayer works well in the middle of a tense moment, such as a disagreement at home or a meeting where you feel overlooked. You can also pray it with a trusted friend or your spouse, asking each other to hold one another accountable. Some people keep a small object in a pocket or on a desk as a reminder to pray whenever they touch it.
A Blessing to Close
May the Lord who humbled himself to serve you fill your heart with his gentle spirit. May he lift you up in due season and keep you close in every quiet, unseen act of love. May you walk in humility, and find your rest in him.
