This prayer is for anyone who wants to love the people around them more faithfully, whether that means a spouse who tests your patience, a child who keeps pushing away, a coworker you find hard to like, or a neighbor you have never really gotten to know. Pray it in the morning before the day’s first conversation, or in the evening when you are replaying a hard exchange. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for Loving Others

Lord, you have loved me long before I ever deserved it, and I come to you today knowing how much I need that love to flow through me to others. Some of the people in my life are easy to love, and some are not. There are people I have grown tired of, people who have hurt me, and people I simply do not understand. Please soften the places in my heart that have grown hard. Show me where I have been impatient, where I have been quick to judge, and where I have chosen my own comfort over someone else’s need.

Help me to notice the people you have placed in front of me this week. Give me eyes to see the tired cashier, the friend who is quietly struggling, and the family member who needs to be heard. When I am tempted to turn away, remind me of how patiently you have dealt with me. Give me words that build up rather than tear down, and the courage to apologize when I get it wrong. Let my love be practical, shown in small kindnesses as well as in big moments. Teach me to love with honesty and with gentleness at the same time. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, I am already short on patience, and this person is already testing it. Fill me with your love so that I can respond with kindness instead of frustration. Slow my tongue, open my ears, and help me see them the way you see them. Let something of your love show through me in the next few minutes, even if I feel I have very little left to give. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 13:4-5

4 Love is patient and is kind; love doesn’t envy. Love doesn’t brag, is not proud, 5 doesn’t behave itself inappropriately, doesn’t seek its own way, is not provoked, takes no account of evil…

(WEB)

Read this slowly and turn each quality into a question about your own week. Ask God where you have been impatient or self-seeking, and let him show you one specific place to practice the kind of love Paul describes.

John 13:34-35

34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

(WEB)

Jesus gives this as a command, not a suggestion. Pray it back to him, asking that the love he showed his disciples would be seen in the way you treat the people closest to you.

1 John 4:19

We love him, because he first loved us.

(WEB)

Use this verse when love feels like a burden. Thank God that your love for others begins with his love for you, and ask him to refill you before you try to give anything away.

Colossians 3:12-13

12 Put on therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do.

(WEB)

Pray this when someone has wronged you. Ask God to clothe you with compassion and patience, and to help you forgive the way the Lord has already forgiven you.

Romans 12:10

In love of the brothers be tenderly affectionate to one another; in honor preferring one another…

(WEB)

Turn this into a daily request for a specific person. Ask God to help you honor them, to put their needs ahead of your own preferences, and to show that honor through how you speak to them.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a regular moment, such as the drive to work, the few minutes after the kids leave for school, or the quiet before bed, and pray this prayer there each day for a week. Keep a small notebook nearby and jot down the name of one person you want to love better. When your hands are busy with dishes, folding laundry, or making coffee, let those ordinary tasks remind you to pray for that person again.

If you are praying for someone else to grow in love, you can invite a friend or your spouse to pray the shorter version over the two of you. Pray it aloud together before a difficult conversation or a family meal. Many people find that praying for a hard relationship changes their own attitude before it changes anything in the other person.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord, who loved you first, fill your heart with patience and kindness that does not run out. May he open your eyes to the people around you and give you grace for each one. May the people you love feel the warmth of his care through you, today and in the days ahead.
