BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

These prayers are written for older people who are growing frail, facing illness, losing friends, or simply getting through another long day with less strength than they once had. Pray them when you visit a parent or grandparent, when you sit beside a hospital bed, or when you find yourself worrying about someone who can no longer look after themselves. You can read the main prayer aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Prayers for the Elderly

Lord, you have been faithful to this person through every season of their life, and you are faithful still. We come to you for the body that tires more quickly now, for the hands that shake when they try to hold a cup, and for the nights when sleep will not come. Be near them in the pain they feel and in the small frustrations that wear away their patience. Give them rest that refreshes, and comfort when the ache is hard to bear.

We also bring you their mind and their heart. Keep their memory clear where it is clear, and gentle where it is failing. Guard them from fear, loneliness and the sense that they have become a burden. Remind them that they still matter to you, that their years have meaning, and that you have not forgotten them. Surround them with people who visit, call, and listen, and help us to be those people. Thank you for every year you have given them. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Father, you know the weariness of this dear one better than anyone. Steady their body today and quiet their worried thoughts. Let them feel your presence in the room, and let them know they are not forgotten or alone. Give them the strength to get through this hour and the peace to trust you with the next one. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Psalm 71:9

Don’t reject me in my old age. Don’t forsake me when my strength fails.

(WEB)

Pray this verse when your elderly loved one feels pushed aside or forgotten. Ask God to remember them in their old age, and to keep them from the fear that they have outlived their usefulness.

Isaiah 46:4

Even to old age I am he, and even to gray hairs I will carry you. I have made, and I will bear. Yes, I will carry, and will deliver.

(WEB)

This verse speaks of God carrying his people through every stage of life. Use it to thank him for the years he has already carried your loved one, and to ask him to keep carrying them now.

Psalm 92:14

They will still produce fruit in old age. They will be full of sap and green…

(WEB)

Pray this for someone who fears that aging means losing purpose. Ask God to keep them fruitful and fresh in spirit, whatever their physical limits may be.

Psalm 23:4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me. Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

(WEB)

Read this when your loved one is facing the end of life or a frightening diagnosis. Pray that they would sense the Shepherd walking beside them, and that fear would give way to trust.

2 Corinthians 4:16

Therefore we don’t faint, but though our outward man is decaying, yet our inward man is renewed day by day.

(WEB)

Pray this when the body is failing but the spirit is still alive. Ask God to renew the inner person day by day, so that your loved one can find encouragement even when outward strength has faded.

How to Pray This Prayer

Choose a quiet time of day, often the morning when your elderly parent or grandparent feels most rested, or the evening before they settle for the night. If you are sitting beside them, hold their hand or rest your hand on their arm while you pray. If you are praying alone, keep a photograph of them nearby or hold a small object that reminds you of them. Pray slowly, and pause after each section to let the words sink in.

You do not have to pray this alone. Invite a sibling, a friend from church, or a home health aide to join you, and let them read the shorter version aloud while you listen. If your loved one can still speak, ask them what they would like you to pray for, and let their words shape the next prayer you offer.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord bless this dear one and keep them in every hour of the day and night. May he make his face shine upon them and give them peace that does not depend on how they feel. May they know, deeply and simply, that they are loved by God and by those who sit beside them.
