BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

This list gives you Scripture about change, arranged by the moments when change feels most unsettling: new beginnings, forced transitions, personal growth and the slow work of becoming someone new. It is written for anyone whose life, work, health or heart is shifting and who wants a firm place to stand. These verses share one thread: the God who begins a work is the same God who carries it through every turn.

Verses for Facing Something New

New circumstances often arrive before we feel ready for them. The verses below speak to the uncertainty of stepping into an unfamiliar season and remind you that the future is not unknown to God.

Isaiah 43:19

Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Don’t you know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.

(WEB)

Isaiah speaks to a people who had lost almost everything and were tempted to cling to what used to be. When a change feels unwelcome, try naming one small thing that is already sprouting. Write it on a card and look at it when the old routine tugs at you.

Lamentations 3:22-23

22 It is because of the LORD’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. 23 They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.

(WEB)

These lines were written from the ruins of Jerusalem, yet they speak of fresh mercy every morning. If a new day feels heavy, let the first waking moment become a habit of thanks. Thank God for one mercy before you check your phone or your inbox.

Revelation 21:5

He who sits on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” He said, “Write, for these words of God are faithful and true.”

(WEB)

This verse is spoken by the One seated on the throne, who promises to make all things new. Hold it up against the change you face and ask what hope it sets before you. Share the promise with someone who is walking through a transition alongside you this week.

Verses for Times of Transition and Loss

Some changes come by loss: a move, a job ending, a relationship shifting or a season of life closing. These passages acknowledge the grief in change while anchoring you to God’s steady presence.

Psalm 46:1-2

1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas…

(WEB)

The psalmist does not pretend the earth is calm; he describes mountains falling into the sea. Use these verses when the ground beneath you feels unstable. Read them slowly aloud and let the word refuge become the first thing you say to God at the start of your day.

Deuteronomy 31:8

The LORD himself is who goes before you. He will be with you. He will not fail you nor forsake you. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be discouraged.”

(WEB)

Moses speaks these words to Israel as a new leader prepares to take over, so the promise was spoken into a moment of real transition. When you are preparing to leave something familiar, pause and name the places you will go next. Ask God to go before you into each one.

Psalm 34:18

The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit.

(WEB)

This verse speaks plainly to those whose hearts are broken by loss. When change has brought grief, you do not need to hide it or hurry past it. Tell God specifically what you miss, and let that honest sentence be your prayer for the evening.

Verses for Personal Growth and Becoming New

Change is not only something that happens around us; it also happens within us as God reshapes our character. These passages describe the inner renewal God is working in people who trust him.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

(WEB)

Paul writes to a church that needed to understand what it meant to belong to Christ. If you feel you are still stuck in old habits, remember that this verse describes your standing before God as well as your daily growth. Choose one old pattern to bring to God this week and ask for help to release it.

Romans 12:2

Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God.

(WEB)

Paul calls believers to be transformed by the renewing of their minds rather than shaped by the pressures around them. When you are tempted to simply go along with the world’s expectations, pause before the next decision and ask what God would have you consider. Let one choice this week be shaped by that question.

Philippians 1:6

Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Paul expresses confidence that God, who began a good work, will complete it. If your progress feels slow or uneven, remember that growth is God’s project and not only your own effort. Thank him for one way you have already changed, however small.

Verses for Facing Change with Courage

Change often asks for bravery: the courage to speak, to step out or to let go. These verses remind you that God strengthens those who move forward in faith.

Joshua 1:9

Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(WEB)

God gives this charge to Joshua as he leads Israel into a land they have never entered. When a change requires you to be brave, read this verse before the hardest conversation or task of the day. Then take the first step, even if it is small.

Isaiah 41:10

Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness.

(WEB)

God speaks directly to a frightened people, promising his presence and strength. When fear rises about what is coming, name the specific thing you are afraid of and place it beside this promise. Notice what changes when you look at your fear in God’s presence.

Matthew 28:20

Teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

(WEB)

Jesus gives this promise to his disciples as he sends them into a world they must now carry his message into. If you are entering an unfamiliar place, remember that the one who sent you goes with you. Speak his presence aloud as you walk into the room or onto the road ahead.

How to Use These Verses

Write the verses that matter most to you on index cards, in a notebook or on the notes app of your phone. Place them where you will see them during the times change feels hardest: beside the kitchen sink, on the dashboard, or on the mirror where you get ready each morning. Repetition helps Scripture settle into the places where anxiety usually takes hold.

Read one verse aloud each morning before the day’s changes begin, and return to it when something unexpected happens. You might pray the verse back to God in your own words, asking him to make it true in the specific situation you face. Over time, the verses you return to in seasons of change will become familiar companions.

A Short Prayer for change

Lord, you see every shift in my life, the ones I welcomed and the ones I did not. Thank you that you are not surprised by what is coming and that you have promised to make all things new. Give me courage for the steps I must take and patience with the growth that happens slowly. Where I cling to what is familiar, loosen my grip gently, and where I feel lost, remind me that you are near. Shape me into the person you intend me to become. Amen.
