BIBLEREADER // SOPHIE GARDNER

This short prayer for strength is for the moments when you feel depleted, worn thin by work, caregiving, illness, grief or a long season of waiting, and you have no energy left to ask for anything. Pray it when you wake up dreading the day, in the car before you walk into a hard meeting, or at night when your mind will not slow down. You can read it aloud exactly as written, or use it as a starting point and put your own words where yours fit better.

Short Prayer for Strength

Lord, I come to you tired. My body feels heavy, my thoughts are scattered, and I am not sure I can carry everything that is in front of me today. Some of it is the work I cannot seem to finish, some of it is the people I love who are struggling, and some of it is the quiet fear that I am not enough for any of it. You know every part of this weight, and you are not surprised by any of it.

So I ask you for strength that is bigger than mine. Give me enough strength for the next hour, not for the whole week. Steady my hands when I am rushed, quiet my heart when I am afraid, and give me patience with the people who need me when I have nothing left to give. When I cannot find the words, help me simply to rest in your presence. I trust that you hold me up even when I feel like I am falling. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Lord, I am running on empty. Give me strength for this moment, and then the next one after that. Steady me where I feel shaky, and keep me from trying to carry tomorrow before it arrives. Let me lean on you right now, and help me trust that you are enough for what is in front of me. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

Isaiah 40:29

He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might.

(WEB)

Pray this verse by naming your weariness out loud, then asking God to give you the power you do not have on your own. It reminds you that strength is something God gives, not something you must manufacture.

Isaiah 40:31

But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.

(WEB)

Read this slowly and ask God to renew you in the places where you feel drained. Let the picture of waiting on the Lord shape how you approach the hours ahead.

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

(WEB)

Pray this when you feel unsafe or overwhelmed. Thank God that he is a refuge you can run to, and ask him to be your strength in the middle of the trouble you are facing.

Philippians 4:13

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

(WEB)

Use this verse to ask for strength for one specific task you are dreading. Pray that Christ would work through you in that situation, so that what feels impossible becomes something you can face.

2 Corinthians 12:9

He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

(WEB)

When you feel weak, pray this verse as an honest admission that you cannot do it alone. Ask God to let his grace be enough for you today, even in your limitations.

How to Pray This Prayer

Try praying this prayer first thing in the morning, before you check your phone or start your to-do list. Sit in a chair you find comforting, and hold a warm cup of tea or a cool glass of water in your hands while you speak. Let the physical act of holding something steady you as you ask God to steady you.

You might also pray it with someone who is carrying a similar weight, such as a spouse, a close friend or a member of your small group. Read it together, pausing after each paragraph, and let each person add a sentence of their own. Praying alongside another person can remind you that you are not the only one who needs strength.

A Blessing to Close

May the Lord who gives strength to the weary surround you with his steady presence today. May he renew your energy one step at a time, guard your heart when it feels thin, and remind you that you are held. Rest in his faithfulness, and go forward knowing he goes with you.
