BIBLEREADER // STEVEN MITCHELL

These short prayers for Easter give you words to speak to God in the joy, quiet and gratitude of the resurrection season. Pray them on Easter morning before church, around a family table, or any day from Easter Sunday through Pentecost when you want to thank Jesus for rising. Read them aloud as written, or use them as a starting point and speak in your own words.

Short Prayers for Easter

Lord Jesus, you died on a cross and you rose again, and this morning I come to you with a full heart. Thank you that the tomb is empty and that the grave did not have the final word. I confess that some mornings I forget how much this changes everything. Some of my fears still feel bigger than your promises, and some of my sins still feel heavier than your mercy. Remind me today that you have already won.

Father, let this Easter reshape how I see my week. Help me bring the people I love, especially those who are far from you or walking through a hard season, into the light of your resurrection. Give my family courage to hope, my friends peace in their loss, and me a steady trust that you are working even when I cannot see it. Thank you for new mercies that arrive each morning. Amen.

A Shorter Version to Pray in a Moment

Risen Lord, you are alive and you are with me right now. Thank you for the empty tomb and the hope it brings. Lift the weight I am carrying and fill this moment with your peace. Help me live today as someone who belongs to a God who conquers death. Amen.

Scriptures to Pray Alongside

1 Corinthians 15:55-57

55 “Death, where is your sting? Hades, where is your victory?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

(WEB)

Pray this passage as a declaration of victory over death and fear. Thank God that the sting has been removed, and ask him to help you hold on to that truth when grief or worry tries to speak louder.

John 20:1-2

1 Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went early, while it was still dark, to the tomb, and saw the stone taken away from the tomb. 2 Therefore she ran and came to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we don’t know where they have laid him!”

Read this slowly and picture Mary arriving at the tomb in the early morning. Ask Jesus to meet you in your own moments of confusion and to turn your questions into worship.

Romans 6:4

We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we also might walk in newness of life.

Use this verse to pray for new life in areas where you feel stuck. Ask the risen Christ to walk you into fresh habits, forgiveness and a renewed sense of who you are.

Psalm 118:24

This is the day that the LORD has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!

(WEB)

This verse is ideal for Easter morning. Let it become your opening prayer of praise, and invite God to help you rejoice in the day he has made even when your circumstances are complicated.

Luke 24:5-6

5 Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. They said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He isn’t here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee…

(WEB)

Pray this passage for those who are searching for Jesus or who feel they have been looking in the wrong places. Ask God to remind them, and you, that the living one is not found among the dead.

How to Pray This Prayer

Many people find it helpful to pray the longer prayer early in the morning, before the noise of the day begins. Sit with a cup of coffee or stand by a window where you can see the light coming in. Holding a cross, an open Bible, or a small flower in your hands can help your attention stay with God.

If you are praying with others, invite each person to read one line aloud, or let the family take turns with the shorter prayer at the dinner table. Children often remember Easter prayers when they are short, clear and said together, so keep the words simple and let them hear the joy in your voice.

A Blessing to Close

May the risen Christ go before you and beside you this Easter season. May the peace that passes understanding guard your heart and steady your mind. May you walk through every day knowing that the one who conquered the grave has already made a way for you.
